His brother was a trouble magnet. He was fast…the fastest creature in the galaxy. And his thoughts moved just as fast as his feet. So to say that he sometimes did not think things through was an understatement.
So when when the three of them had been sitting in the living room during a rainy morning, Maddie and Tom at work, Tails tinkering at the table with some gadget, and Knuckles reclined into the back of the couch flipping through a good book and he saw his brother’s eyes light up and feet become restless…he really should have known.

Tails had seen that look before. He knew what it meant.
Rejection.
He'd almost let himself forget. Almost didn't have to remember. Every day since he'd come to this planet, the memory faded a little bit more. Even if it would always be there, it couldn't share the spotlight when the intoxicating feelings that came with living in this place, in that house, with that family overwhelmed him with their potency. It had all been so bright… so warm…
There was no warmth in Maddie's eyes when she looked back at him.
She looked at him like he was a stranger.-
A post-Sonic 3 movie fic based on the last look Maddie gives them before they go to stop the Eclipse Cannon and what it means to Tails in particular. Lucky for him he has two big brothers always looking out for him.

Summary
The kit pulled his tails around his body, almost protectively as he stared down at the echidna. His small hands clutched a blue blanket close to his body, tucked near his chin.
“Can I…ummm…can I sleep with you?”
The soft, shaky voice caused Knuckles eyes to soften. He was about to answer when a loud crack of thunder followed by a sharp burst of light caused the kit to shriek softly. Before Knuckles could react further the small ball of fluff careened forward into his broad chest, small hands clutching at his red fur, burying himself under Knuckles’ blanket.
The echidna huffed with amusement but adjusted himself around the tiny being that now occupied his bed. He pulled himself to his side, allowing Tails’ form to tuck further into his chest. Knuckles lifted the top of the blanket and looked down upon the tremoring ball of fur.
“It’s alright, fox.” he said softly, bring one large hand down so his arm held the child more tightly. “You are safe.”

“Sled hills are for amateurs…which we are not!”
“It’s pretty steep…”
“And that’s half the fun!” the hedgehog continued. He adjusted the thick puffer jacket around his chest and pulled his hat down over his quills.
“Are there rules?” the fox kit asked, eyebrows raised. “Because I think there should be rules.”
“Eh, rules aren’t much fun…” Sonic flipped his hand toward the youngest dismissively.
“I agree with the fox…” Knuckles voiced. “Rules will make it fair so that I can boast without argument when I beat you to the bottom.”
Sonic shoved the echidna’s shoulder, probably more forcefully than necessary.
“Alright fine…rules…” Sonic started, bringing his hand up to his chin in thought. He watched as his brothers shifted in their winter gear. Knuckles seemed especially affronted by the layers that their mom had insisted they put on.
As Sonic stared, a sly grin began to make its way across his lips. His grip on his board tightened and his muscles began to tense.
“The rules are…” Sonic subtly turned toward the slope. “…that there are no rules!”

Summary
The mission went from stopping the Eclipse Cannon from destroying Earth to saving Sonic very quickly.
Below, Knuckles saw Tails latch himself to Sonic and hold up the ring to bring them safely to the ground. But something was wrong. Tails wasn’t throwing the ring. His hand wavered. He made no attempts to save them.
When the ring slipped from his fingers, Knuckles knew he had to save them both.
