Decision made, he twists awkwardly, trying not to draw attention to himself as tugs his cloak around so he might look at the back of it. His plan had been simple: grab and chuck it into the air. Was it the gentlest course of action? No. But was it the safest, most convenient one? Absolutely.
Instead, he finds the breath stilling in his lungs, chest growing cold as he takes in the bat in front of him. Short, stubby ears rather than the long, slender ones of the brown bats around them. The bat’s eyes gleam, nestled in an intelligent face.

It was to Scott Goldsmith's incredible misfortune that he had recently realized he could, in fact, still feel. Absolutely revolting. He should have followed his original plan. None of them noticed even a hint of Scott's presence as he carefully stepped onto the stone segment of the bridge behind Pyro. He hadn't thought they would, given his centuries of practice. But it was still disappointing; their enemy had at least one vampire firmly in their ranks— that his menagerie of Fledglings did so little to observe their surroundings for unwanted ears was a rather glaring weakness.

The last shot is accompanied by the trail of a cry, shrill, angry, fearful. Arthur lowers his revolver. Blinks. Tongues at a bloody tooth from getting hit while strangling an O’Driscoll, spits red mucus onto one of the bodies on the floor.
The crying starts up again, as if sensing Arthur’s confusion. For a moment, Arthur thinks it must be some poor lady these savages have taken alongside the house, but quickly knows it to be untrue. It’s too—wet, pointless in a way only the young can manage, knowing that something is wrong but not knowing what. Just a shout, not the bellowing anguish of someone who knows what god-awful situation they have been put in.
“Christ,” he says, once, twice. “Christ.”

Arthur accidentally adopts a baby, and, despite his best judgement, ends up starting to raise him. He falls in love with Charles along the way.

Annesburg was gone. The entire hillside, all the mud and sludge and coal piled on the side, had fallen on the town. The roofs of a few company houses were still visible above the waste, but otherwise, it was just an empty. Unnatural for both the landscape and thriving mining town that once existed there.
Arthur joins the rescue efforts when a landslide destroys Annesburg. It's already too late.
