There, nestled awkwardly against the base of the steps, was a child.
A girl. Young, eighteen months? Maybe twenty. Her cheeks were red from crying, and her nose running, her little fists clenched around a fraying scrap of blanket. No coat. Just a too-thin dress and tights, dusted with dirt and morning chill.
Regina’s breath caught in her throat. She took a step forward. The child flinched.
Pinned to the girl’s collar, hand-scrawled in uneven ink. Her heart lurched even before she read it.Back in the Enchanted Forest, Regina had instituted a policy that allowed unwanted children to be surrendered to the Royal Guard if the surrendering parent provided the child's name and the kingdom in which they were born, along with the name of the monarch.
This child had been left in front of the sheriff's station, as close to the royal guard as one would find in Storybrooke.
