“It’s just…when you went missing, I promised I would never let anything bad happen to you again.” Finally, he lifts his eyes to meet Will’s, and they’re a watery shade of brown. “And then I was the bad thing, over and over.”
The thought of twelve-year-old Mike making such an impossible promise makes his chest ache to the point where he worries something might shatter if he doesn’t remain strong enough to hold the pieces together. Will reaches out to touch Mike’s hand, tentative against where they’re tangled in the blanket. “Why are you bringing all of this up, Mike? Did something happen? Are you and El…,” he trails off, not allowing himself to even finish the question.
“No, nothing happened. And me and El, I mean, we’re fine. We’re always…fine,” Mike says, a breath of laughter escaping with it, which confuses Will even more. “But earlier, what Max and El said, it got me thinking. About how this battle with the Titans is getting closer and closer. And I want you to know that…being your friend, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. And although I’ve fucked up a lot, I’m going to keep my promise. I’m not letting anything else happen to you ever again. Okay?”

Summary
Years have passed, and the Party has mostly drifted apart with the onset of adulthood. But after a painful encounter of Will’s, they discover a strange connection which opens their minds to one another and forces them back together. As they try to figure out what this connection really is, and how to sever it, certain things that might never have been shared or known otherwise eventually get dragged into the light.

Mike doesn’t meander on his way back, cutting across corners and over lawns, and the strange pain is less overwhelming with his sneakers pounding against the pavement, the air sharper against his cheeks. He feels a faint lingering nausea that he just knows is Dustin’s, alongside the strange sensation of hands on his back and the sentiment of go unlock the door, Mike’s coming back that feels rough against the back of his throat.
Holy shit you’re out of shape, dude, Lucas’s voice is clearly ringing inside his head, somewhere just past his eardrums, and Dustin’s strangled amusement is clear as Mike manages to convey a sense of shut up without actually thinking the words.

Reaching for a candy bar, Eddie’s hand closed around something warm and wiry. Looking over slowly, all eight eyes of the spider met his gaze. Eddie screamed and threw the spider out the open passenger side window.
“No, no, fuck no!” Eddie rolled up the windows as though it might try to climb back in.
Taking a few deep breaths, Eddie met his own eyes in the rearview mirror.
“IT is dead and if IT wasn’t it would do a lot fucking worse than torment me with an immortal spider. It’s… it’s just trauma or something.”
The spider leapt out of his backseat roughly six hours later and he nearly caused a four car pile up with his swerving. Eventually he managed to trap it in an empty soda cup in a move that included spilling gummy worms across the seats and holding the wheel steady with his knee to free up his hand.
“I swear to god if you come out of that cup, I’ll throw you out of the car again. I don’t give a fuck if it’s littering. I’ll pay the fine.”
Eddie Kaspbrak wakes up in the collapsing sewers by himself, not nearly as dead as the other Losers thought him to be, not happy to find himself left behind, and not quite alone either. OR Eddie Kaspbrak and the spider that just won’t die.

“Dustin?” he manages, when he finally catches his breath. It’s all he can think to say. Not what are you doing here? Not how did you know where to find me? Not why did you just crash your own car into a lamppost?
It’s not like Dustin was ever the answerable kind of question.
Dustin spits some blood to his left and breaks out into an uneasy smile. He limps forward, leaning on Will’s shoulder. His breath comes out in hasty wheezes. “Been driving three days straight,” he says, like that explains it. “Can I sleep in your bed?”
Then he faints into Will’s arms.
It’s the fall of 1994. Will starts a new life in San Francisco under a pseudonym, seeking refuge from his past. Dustin works for the feds, clearing up the last ghostly traces of the Upside Down.
Until the details of a strange new case force him to bring Will in under investigation.
