It’s inconceivable that it should end like this. That their bodies - having shared every intimate secret possible - will have to settle for casual acquaintance. They’re on the cusp of a potential everything, but hurtling towards an actual nothing, and as the wall clock continues to tick it's brutal countdown, Elio wants to toss it, smash it: bury it like a tell-tale heart.

  4. Summary

'Every tale is a tragedy when viewed in a certain light, but these are our memories, Oliver, laid out in black and white, and should I be destined to share Maman’s fate, I’m wont to ensure that someone, someday, will remember us.'

Five years after his impromptu visit to Dartmouth University, Elio sends Oliver the journal he kept when he was the most hard-done-by teenager on earth. Will the yellowed pages shed a new light on the summer of ‘83? And in the face of such revelations, is it too late to make amends with the man who changed his life?

    Summary

“There’s information coming out that the Centaur’s plane crashed on its way to Tampa.”

The entire world tilts on its axis.

For a moment Shane feels like he’s being burned alive, and then in an instant it’s just bitter cold; there’s ice in his veins, his lungs, his heart. God, his heart. Is it still beating? He can’t tell. Surely not. Surely, if Ilya were - if he were gone, then Shane’s heart would have fallen still. There would be nothing left for it to beat for.

    Summary

Shane picks up on the third ring.

    “What?”

Ilya closes his eyes, humiliation twisting his gut. Still, though, it’s nice to hear his voice. His shoulders sag a little. “Hollander?”

“I don’t–” Shane sighs, long and heavy. “Why are you calling?”

Why is he calling? Ilya couldn’t answer. Not in any way that makes sense, anyway.

Voice wobbling, Ilya says, “I am sorry.” He inhales, breath hitching horribly. “Was mistake.”

On the other line, Shane goes quiet. Then, shuffling around, he says, “What’s going on, Rozanov?”

Or: Ilya calls Shane in the middle of the night, and against his better judgment, Shane comes to find him.

    Summary

Ilya looked out at the lake and sighed, hearing Shane's footsteps disappear back into the cottage, their empty plates in tow.

Ilya had screwed up somehow but he wasn't quite sure how. He knew coming out wasn't easy - even if he had parents who loved and supported him, he wasn't sure how comfortable he would feel telling them, but he got the sense Shane wanted to tell his. Ilya had been trying to be supportive of that. But Shane was annoyed and now he was inside, alone, and Ilya was out here, alone, and they only had two weeks, so that wasn't okay.

    Summary

Wyatt lightly punches him in the shoulder, and Ilya opens one eye to see Wyatt holding out his phone towards Ilya’s face.

Ilya’s eyes grow wide, a sick feeling settling in his stomach.

The match barely ended two hours ago, and already, there’s an article questioning if Shane had tripped on purpose. If Shane had tripped to let Ilya win.

Ilya’s initial reaction is that of extreme insult. As if he needed Shane Hollander to let him win.

    But then…fuck. Shane.

Ilya stands up suddenly and crawls over Wyatt (and steps on his feet none too gently in the process). He strides as fast as he can to the front of the bus towards Coach Wiebe.

He leans down and murmurs to his coach, and gets a look of complete understanding.

“As soon as we get to the airport, go,” Wiebe says. “We’ll see you in the morning.”

    --

Or after Shane trips during that fateful game, Ilya refuses to let him face the aftermath alone.
