Summary
Astarion has killed Cazador Szarr. It should have been the happiest day of his life, but when he decides to complete the ritual and ascend, not one of his new-found friends will help him. Even Divarra, the one person to whom he has bared his soul, refuses him. Embittered, he turns away from them and tries to make a life for himself in the shadows.However, life for a solitary spawn is not easy, and Astarion finds himself unable to let go.
No longer certain she made the right decision, Divarra is racked with guilt. She still wants to help Astarion fulfill his dream of walking in the sun.
Can they find a way to forgive each other? And will Astarion find his way back into the light?‘I can do this,’ he says, ‘but I need your help. Your eyes, so to speak. Use the parasite, show me the scars on my back so I can carve them into his flesh, so I can do to him what he did to me.’
Szarr whimpers and Astarion looks down at him with contempt. It is hard to reconcile the pitiful creature grovelling before him, with the cruel master who tormented him for almost two hundred years.

Amanita Szarr was turned by her uncle, Cazador Szarr at the age of thirteen. Nobody knew what became of her.
Some time after Astarion Ascends and takes over the Crimson Palace, Amanita is discovered hiding in the palace dungeons, the Tourmaline Depths.
Now, Amanita is trying hard to adjust to her new status as Astarion’s ward, and her return to civilisation.
Every ten-day, she has to report to the Vampire Ascendant. Usually, these interviews are not long, but today, Amanita gets to see more of Astarion and his consort than she expected.

We follow his progression from unwilling law student to his final days as a magistrate in Baldur's Gate where, swayed by the promise of gold and advancement, he falls into the clutches of Cazador Szarr.
