Now that his mother was in her second term, Alex was in a position to do more now than ever before – as long as he kept trending, and he maintained his favor with the public, and made sure he was still the golden boy people wanted him to be.
He wasn’t allowed to be ungrateful. He wasn’t allowed to move away from girls with Claremont-Holleran pins on their shirts who put their hands in the back pocket of his jeans on election night, or actresses who grabbed his chin and pulled him in for a kiss on New Year’s, or journalists with a soft spot for his father’s policies coaxing him into a hot tub on the campaign trail when he was barely old enough to vote himself.
After all, Alex belonged to America. All of him.
Sometimes, he wasn’t sure if Henry had figured that out yet.
Or: After a night out, Henry realizes exactly how Alex feels about belonging to his country.

Summary
“Do you want to tell me what’s going on?”
A slow breath. “My head hurts.”
“Oh?”
“And I’m tired. Really– tired.”
Henry sighs, drawing circles over the smooth fur on David’s ear. He can’t say that he’s surprised. This last term has been hard on Alex, as exam seasons always are and Henry can count the nights he didn’t need to drag him to bed at three am over the last few weeks on one hand.
A crash was always inevitable and Henry was always planning on being right here to catch him when it came. He only hoped it wouldn’t happen this soon– so Alex could enjoy at least one carefree night.
His beautiful, hard working boyfriend of all people would have deserved that much. But Henry knows better than to take this call for anything other than it is: a plea to hear what Alex can’t bear to speak out loud.
“Would you like to come home, my love?”
or - Alex has a tough day and Henry reminds him that his family will always be there waiting for him.

Summary
I've seen the plot of "Alex was raped and tells Henry he cheated on him in order to protect Henry. They break up until Alex's secrets are revealed" (an old story and the new one -- both brilliant!) and I wanted to add my own take to that plot: What if Henry doesn't believe Alex when he says he cheated?
There will be no explicit discussion of the rape or SANE exam, but both will be mentioned, so be kind to yourself and read with caution.
Established relationship, movie/book canon mushed together as I please, prior to a move to the brownstone.
