Her heart was thrashing so hard against her ribs that she was convinced it would burst from her chest at any moment. She was sweating bullets, her hands clammy and stiff with a death grip on her glass so tight she feared it would shatter. Just spit it out!
“Leon,” She nervously started as she forced herself to look him in the eyes, vibrating from head to toe, “I wanted to tell you that I-”
A glint of light flashed in the corner of her eye. Her gaze snapped down toward the offending shine, only to realize it was coming from him. The color drained from her face as all her focus riveted on his left hand, to a silver band encircling his ring finger.
Was that… a wedding ring?

He sputtered incredulously, pulling out the flash drive with her information and scrambling around the computer toward his superior, “What! Are you crazy?!"
Leon gritted his teeth at being questioned, “I said release her.” He turned around and put his palm back on the glass, “I’m getting her out of here.”

Time and space seemed to cease all at once, blood roaring in your ears. You stopped breathing, like you’d been submerged in a pool of ice water. There’s no way. He couldn’t have said that.
You narrowed your eyes, scrutinizing him, seeing the guilt written all over his face, the vulnerability in his demeanor. He barely even blinked, his tired gaze intense and overwhelming as he tightly held your hand. You waited for him to clarify, to follow up with reassurance that you were still his main priority, but he just stood there, staring at you, like he expected you to just accept it.
You hadn’t imagined it. He really did say it.
