Jamie hadn’t been into the bakery, and he wasn’t going to go in with his mum but the weird emo-kid who hated football was working at the bookstore and they never gave him good recommendations, so he followed his mother in through the door and froze.
“Roy?”
The man behind the counter stared at him.
“Fuck!”
“Roy?’ Jamie said again. “You’re a fucking…baker?”
“For fuck’s sake,” Roy said, walking through the door behind the counter. “Mei, your customer.”
An older, tall Asian woman stepped out. “What’s got your knickers in a twist?” She laughed. “Jamie fucking Tartt, he bitches about you all the fucking time.”
Jamie gaped at her. “That was fucking Roy Kent, wasn’t it?”
Mei nodded. “What can I get you?”
“You can get me that dusty old fart.”
Mei laughed. “Roy, your customer.”
