Emily’s eyes narrowed. “You said ‘he’s actually more talkative than you’d expect,’” she repeated slowly. “There was no speculation anywhere in that statement. That was a statement of fact.”

“No, it-it’s something I used to say to my mom. A cigarette takes six minutes off of your life. So whenever she was trying to quit, I’d tell her: ‘That’s six more minutes that I’ll get to spend with you.’”
“Did it work?” Hotch asks, lowering his arm in quiet guilt.
Reid takes the cigarette. “No.”
Hotch hands him the lighter.
or, what if hotch was just a little bit less well-adjusted, and reid was just a tad more high-strung.

Summary
Spencer takes Hotch’s hand in his own and brings it across the space between them to rest over his knees, cradled in both of his hands like something precious. Hotch doesn’t object, silently watching Spencer’s movements with a wary tilt of his head.
“Do you always change parts of yourself to manage other’s perceptions?” The question trips past Spencer's lips before he can think better of it.
Hotch tenses, his hand clenching and unclenching in Spencer’s hold like he wants to pull away from the conversation, from Spencer. His hand stays in place.
“Doesn’t everyone?” He asks quietly, and something about his tone makes Spencer look up for the first time since he started this bizarre interrogation.
Spencer almost doesn’t want to break it to him.
“No,” he says, looking back to the hand in his lap and lacing their fingers together for a selfish moment, a breath, “not everyone.”
AKA A night out with the team quickly devolves, and Spencer’s still dizzy trying to put it back together.
