For the first time, Lucas realises that none of them had ever really talked to Will about the Upside Down. He’s sure Joyce had tried, but Will always tried to protect his mother and brother, always felt like he was a burden on a family that was barely scraping together as it was, backs bending with the strain of giving Will some semblance of a good childhood. Lucas and Max had had each other, Dustin had had Steve, and Mike and Eleven had protected each other best they could.
Will, though… had never really had anyone. Once again, Lucas feels his heart twist in guilt over how they’d treated Will the summer before last, the summer after he’d been possessed.

Summary
He hangs Will’s painting in Max’s room. It’s possibly for Lucas’ benefit than it is for Max’s but Lucas looks so painfully grateful for it that Mike can’t bring himself to take it back. Even if he spends the few nights he gets at home staring at the wall where he’d thought -for one brief bright moment when he’d dared to believe they’d win again- that he’d get to hang it.
“He’s getting too good.” Lucas says, apropos nothing. Mike follows his eyes to the painting, to them, hopeful and young and triumphant.
When Mike had seen it first, it had felt like he’d re-settled in his skin for the first time in years. He wonders what it means, when the most real he’s ever felt is in Will’s brushstrokes.

The host is silent in his head for the first time in millenia, and Michael can almost hear himself think without the song of Heaven blaring a chorus at the back of his many skulls.

Summary
Dream’s face is set in a handsome moue as he surveys the deadened landsacape around them both. Lucifer had tried, at first, attempted to reconnect with… existence, but this- this beach with its darkened shores and with basalt soaking the air calls to him more than the life and colours of humanity.
A younger Lucifer would have considered that an invitation to ponder upon himself, an older Lucifer appreciates the serenity for what it is.
