The muscles in his shoulders tightened. “Stop talking like that.”
She ignored the warning. “Or perhaps,” she said softly, “the beast doesn’t care about chains. Perhaps it only cares about the right stimulus. The right words. The right…” She trailed off, her gaze holding his. “…prey.”
Something changed.
It was subtle at first - the smallest quiver in his jaw, the way his breathing deepened. His pupils flared, catching the light oddly, too reflective. The tendons in his neck stood out as though something inside was pushing forward, wanting out.
“Don’t,” he said again, his voice strained now.
Wednesday did not step back. “Why?”
The answer came in a sound - not a word - but a low, guttural noise in his throat, the kind a man shouldn’t be able to make. The chain at his wrist snapped taut as his arm jerked involuntarily toward her, metal clanging against metal.

“My names Marilyn Thornhill.” She smiles prettily and Tyler tries to hold in the way he wants to seethe back. “Ms. Thornhill. I’m a new teacher in town, at Nevermore?” And she tilts her round doll face like it’s a question and she’s asking him to be sure.
“Oh, too bad.” Tyler feels enough relief at the fact he won’t have to be dodging this lady between all of his classes that he manages to work himself up into a vaguely retail-appropriate smile. “Not my crowd. Good luck with that though.”
It's a sleepy summer day in Jericho when Tyler meets two new Nevermore Academy residents, a teacher and a student, who come into the Weathervane throughout his shift.
