Summary
The Cloud Recesses Guest Lectures were held every three years for disciples between the ages of fifteen and eighteen. They had three purposes.
The first (and the reason it was hosted by the Lan) was to provide a shared baseline understanding of the core cultivation topics that underpinned every sect while not divulging clan-specific approaches.
The second was to create opportunities for friendships and alliances that would reduce the chance of war between the clans.
The third, and most important, was for the clans to replenish their bloodline by finding compatible mates with strong cultivation skills. In the last month of the lectures, challenges to test compatibility may be issued.
Wei Wuxian challenges Lan Wangji, sure that they are mates. The Lan refuse to allow the Challenge.

“No.” Wei Wuxian’s eyes dart to Lan Zhan, who is paying close attention to his husband. Again, something in the way he looks at Almost Definitely Future Wei Wuxian turns Present Wei Wuxian’s stomach.
“You thought Lan Zhan liked Mianmian and—”
“Stop!” Wei Wuxian begs, panicking.
“—you thought about the two of them together.”
Lan Zhan’s eyebrows raise minutely.
Wei Wuxian is now fully convinced that this really is his future self.
“SHUT UP!” he shouts, his face flushing red.
“It upset you,” Future Wei Wuxian continues. “But you nearly strangled your poor dick to death fantasizing about the two of them having sex! Tell me…which one of them were you really focusing on?”
This gives Wei Wuxian pause. He never…really gave it much thought. He replays some of the highlights and blanches when he realizes that he doesn’t even remember what Mianmian looks like.

“It’s okay that you miss him,” said Lan Wangji, a familiar litany to them both by now. “Do you feel sad?”
“I feel sad,” A-Yuan repeated, shoulders hitching with tiny hiccuping sniffs. “When is he coming back?”
“I don’t know. I am not sure where he is.”
But this seemed to frustrate A-Yuan. “Xian-gege! I miss him! Please, baba?” He looked up at him with wet cheeks and a wide, quivering frown. “Please baba can you ask him? I really miss him!” He sobbed again, heartbreakingly.
It stabbed straight through him, cracking open the reservoir of loss and helplessness that was all his own. His child’s grief did that, sometimes. It always took him by surprise. He caught his breath sharply and gathered A-Yuan into his arms, holding him tight until the pain ebbed.
“I will try,” he said softly into A-Yuan’s hair, when he could speak again. He never made uncertain promises and tried not even to raise uncertain hopes, but his son was hurting. His son believed he could make it better. He couldn’t not try.
Wen Qing might at least know who this “Xian-gege” was. He would text her in the morning. It would be a start.

So there was this jar, and it had so much peanut butter still in it, and when his fox nose scented it and didn’t catch any poison or spoilage, what was he supposed to do? Not avail himself of this gift? No. He shoved his delicate little snout right in there and got to licking, but, you know… Elegantly. Definitely not snarfing and making horrible little fox sounds and rolling around on the ground while he went ham on the jar. Sure, he had to work a little bit to get at the last of it, but anything good is worth working for, right? So finally, triumphant, no longer starving, and maybe a little thirsty now from eating half a cup of peanut butter in about two minutes, he’d tried to remove his head from the jar.
