Summary
Hermes had not believed in merpeople since he was about seven years old, when he still had hopes and dreams and the starry-eyed gaze of a child with an overactive imagination. But the reality of life had crashed down upon him when his mother died, and his slow ascent into adulthood had been tainted with monotony and depression, leading to what Hermes described as a highly unsatisfying existence. He was not meant for this world. A nine to five, Monday to Friday job for the next forty or so years of his life sounded like his own personal hell, which was partly why he’d decided to try a new career path in a bid to spruce things up.
That choice had brought him here, knelt before the large indoor tank inside the lab of the marine biology research facility that sat atop a cliff overlooking the ocean, staring at a real, living merman.

Summary
It was the life he had chosen for himself. Every step he took was so painful he would have screamed in agony if only he had a voice. But it was the life he had chosen for himself.
In exchange of everything that had made him, he could roam the human world on his own two legs, to see all of its beauty and its horror.
But being a mute bard was a heavy burden, so maybe following a witcher to the edge of the world and back could bring him both inspiration for life and his voice again?

“Freak.”
Geralt doesn’t flinch.
It’s nothing he hasn't heard before, usually followed by a derisive laugh. The stranger might not have meant for him to hear the word, muttered as it is while Geralt's back is turned.
Even when people have heard about Witcher Syndrome and know what to expect from it, they seem to forget about the more acute senses. So, he pretends that the insult was just an unconscious aside that the man behind him meant to keep to himself, and tries to continue his workout.

Witcher Syndrome is a disorder that causes genetic mutations to occur to those who develop it. While some symptoms could almost be considered advantageous, others are clearly detrimental to those affected. As with any disability, there are those with prejudices against those that are “other” or “different”.
Geralt has spent most of his life learning to protect himself from those who won’t understand that his differences don’t make him a freak.But, it will take someone with quite a lot of zest for life and self-love, to show Geralt how to be okay with himself, and to remind him that he is still only human.
Someone like Jaskier.
