Ben’s answering laugh is crystal clear, and it’s surprising that such a frequent sound can suddenly impact relief and content. “Whatcha’ gonna do, carry me over the threshold, bridal style?” His eyebrows waggle obscenely, and Callum has to school his face into an unimpressed façade.
“Don’t tempt me.” He replies, although his attempted threatening tone falls unbelievably flat. Instead, he sounds hopeful, and the dopey grin settled on his features does not help his case.

“And here I was going to behave, ask if I am yet allowed to touch you.” Ilya reaches between them to capture Shane’s chin between thumb and forefinger, looking intently into his eyes for a half-dozen heartbeats or so. Then his lips are on Shane’s, a warm press of mouths turned wet as Ilya slides his tongue between Shane’s teeth.
“It was so fucking annoying, not being able to,” Shane grumbles into Ilya’s mouth, breaking the kiss so he can nuzzle Ilya’s pulse instead. “Not wanting this is stupid as hell.” As he rubs the underside of his jaw into Ilya’s shoulder, he feels the alpha’s low chuckle vibrate through to the base of his own spine, making him squirm.
“For once we agree on something, Hollander. You are very stupid and annoying.”
Some months after Shane recovers from rejection sickness in Ilya's bed, they share their heat/rut together at the cottage, both clinging to the delusion it's still casual.

Summary
In the course of a single day, John Brady receives the career-ending news that he is both intersex and four months pregnant in the middle of a war. His refusal to terminate on religious grounds begins five months of a difficult, life-threatening pregnancy and a drift away from other people as he experiences a newly alien body, all while the English medical system strips him of the autonomy he was once afforded—back when doctors saw him as entirely male—in degrees.
As he increasingly leans on his Catholicism to cope with the horrors of his situation, profound isolation in an unfamiliar city, separation from the man he is in love with, and estrangement from his own body, John becomes more and more fixated on the story of the Virgin Mary and the idea of divinely ordained pregnancy until their identities begin to bleed together at the edges.
Heavy subject matter, heed warnings. Dead dove; do not eat!
UPDATE as of 1/17/2026: FAWM is back in the works! The anemia ended up tipping us onto a lot of other health issues that had gone undetected, so I've been on a long medical hiatus, but I'm back in the saddle and chapter 5 is in progress again!
