Ever since Oliver had given Louis "permission" to write in the gallery, Harry's mornings had been a slow descent into caffeinated psychological warfare, Louis called him Gallery Boy like a slur as if Harry was just a pretty face who dressed well and sold overpriced nonsense to rich twats who didn't know the difference between art and a coffee stain, Harry called him Author equally dismissive like Louis was some overhyped novelist who hadn't finished a book in years but still talked like the tortured sarcastic soul of Bloomsbury
They didn't care enough to call themselves enemies, they were... opposites, colliding by accident, then stubbornly refusing to move
"You ever hear the full history of Polari?" Louis murmured, voice warm in Harry's ear. "Properly, I mean?"
Harry shook his head not because he didn't know, he just couldn't trust his voice
"They'd say things like ogles for eyes. Zhoosh for style. Bona for good." His tone dropped a bit. "Ferricadoozad for broken."
"I know what it means," Harry rasped
"Do you?" Louis asked, all breath and amusement and intent "because you wear it well. All that polish and precision like you've spent your whole life making sure no one looks too close"

“Jesus Christ, Louis, I know I could’ve called!” Harry’s tone grows, voice rough, like he’s had enough. The pianist’s notes grow louder, masking their conversation.
“I know I fucked up, I know I’m a terrible fucking person! I ghosted you, I decided your career was more important, I never reached out. I’ve been living with this guilt for four years and I know I deserve it! I don’t know what else you want me to say, Louis!”
