    The boy blinks at him.

    Odysseus blinks back.

    The boy glances down, up, down again, down towards the scar—Then his eyes snap up to Odysseus. There seems to be a sort of confusion in his eyes.

    Odysseus almost barks at him. “You are a skinny, underdeveloped thing. Either you are a child who has grown far beyond the reasonable height or you are a peasant boy starved of food.”

    “I eat plenty well,” the boy snaps back. “And it’s not my fault you’re barely breaking past 5’5.”

    “What in the Hades does ‘five-five’ mean?” Odysseus asks, throwing his head back in annoyance. What in the hells was he doing, arguing with this kid? He might be going insane. “You know what? Get out. Leave this stupid room. I need to fucking relax without a whiny voice in my ear.”

    She does all she can to stop herself from laughing when the conversation begins - and also smacks Leo later when he almost chokes on his own laughter at the thought of Annabeth "I have stabbed a being of every species I have ever encountered" Chase being a babysitter.

    But, by the end of the conversation, she doesn’t really see any reason at all why she shouldn’t try for the job. Annabeth isn’t blind - she can clearly see by the state of Pepper’s attire that she’s well off, so the pay would be good, and it’s not like being a babysitter is any harder than anything else she's done in her roughly two decades of living and breathing.

    Plus, if she’s being honest, she’s not exactly in a position to pick and choose with jobs.

     

    Annabeth Chase is halfway through her Bachelor's at Columbia, smack in the middle of post-Blip NYC and five years younger than she should be. The only thing a second part-time job can hurt is her sleep-schedule and she never had one of those to begin with. Babysitting for a family swimming with superheroes is mostly a piece of cake, but pardon her if it didn't occur to her that introducing the Potts-Stark family to the mess that is her life could present an opportunity for disaster.

    Jason recognizes the kid on the news, he realizes, when he idly glances up from his book to the TV playing silently in front of him.

    That’s not unusual, per say.

    Kids from Crime Alley, from the Narrows? They make the news all the time, and he knows, or knew, a lot of ‘em. They’re always warnings, tragic and broken, and even if they don’t use the kids’ names, he can usually recognize the faces the headlines are paired with.

    They aren't usually being labeled as "domestic terrorists" on national television, though. But maybe Percy Jackson's just always been an outlier. Jason remembers he was a pretty weird kid, from the very few times they met.
