Summary
It takes Jean perhaps a little too long to start understanding Kevin. He thought he had, once upon a time, when they were the closest thing to friends either of them had. And then he was convinced he didn’t, that he never had, when Kevin left and Jean stayed in his place.
But the thumbnail—which never loads this fast, honestly, what kind of universal bullshit is this—is a picture of what is unmistakably a young Kevin, no more than seven or eight, grinning brightly at the camera.
Maybe Jean never got to know what Kevin should have been.

Summary
Jean woke with too much salt in his mouth and not enough air in his lungs.
It was not the first time he’d woken that way, but it had been years since even his unconscious body had felt safe enough to allow it. Distance from the experience didn’t mean he didn’t remember, though, and he pushed himself upright as quietly as he could, holding his breath just to keep from gasping. Once he was sitting in the bed, legs bending to pull close to his chest—always protect the center; bones will heal, but internal bleeding may not—he couldn’t help it any longer.
The first breath in was loud, ripping the air from the room almost as violently as the dream had ripped it first from him. He hoped for relief, for a flood of oxygen that would slow his racing heart and kick his sluggish brain into motion. Instead, all it did was shred his throat on the way down, too desperately taken to be smooth, too carelessly stolen not to have been poisoned. He let it out again in a rush, pulling another in immediately afterward. This was how breathing worked, wasn’t it?

Maverick wasn’t ready to be a Captain, who was he kidding?
