Summary
7 years is a long time to be stuck in a pet shop. Other borrowers come and go far more often; they’re younger, cuter, sociable. Ethan’s “just not what people are looking for,” meaning he’s quieter, more wary, less obedient. He knows, though, that all borrowers are quiet and wary; they only do what they’re told to survive. He can’t quite see anyone adopting him, but he thinks that if someone did, they’d be nice. He figures that if he’s so “undesirable” by store standards, the person who’d look past that would have to be someone nice.
At least, he hopes so.

Mark put on The Lion King, much to Jack’s chagrin. It wasn’t that the Tian didn’t like the movie--he loved it, actually--it was that Mark loved to sing along. Loudly. He also liked to hold Jack up like Simba and pretend that he knew the words to the song. He knew practically every word, and Jack was able to push through the annoyance to find fond laughter and sing along with him.
