The morning after a night spent together, Huaisang can almost believe that it was real. His heart is light, and the morning sun bathes his face in a comforting warmth. Birds are singing. Huaisang’s arms are wrapped around a familiar figure, soft and relaxed from sleep. It’s almost like they’re back in Gusu, sixteen again, with scarcely an idea of what is to come. If he doesn’t open his eyes, he can almost believe that all they have waiting for them is another day of Lan Qiren’s classes. Maybe he can even answer one of the old man’s questions this time. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Love to Declan Lynch was a never-ending task list. It was driving Matthew to practice, making sure his school uniforms got cleaned, keeping him on a regular schedule. It was keeping Ronan from getting expelled, paying for his numerous speeding tickets, making sure Gansey didn’t let him stray too far. Love was fights in parking lots and in his car after church and everywhere because Ronan couldn’t fucking keep it together enough to help himself. It was knowing that he was only a shadow of his parents.
Love was a burden, and Declan could not handle any more of it.

That’s it. Technically, he’s part of the Hall of Fame, technically he’s an accepted Champion. Technically, the title was his once, so it will always be his. Technically, he can’t lose it. He just loses being the present Champion.
He also, briefly, held the Kanto record for youngest ever Pokemon League champion. That was until Red, three months younger, caught up to him.
Really, Blue hadn’t even been surprised.

Gansey would be awake too probably, cross-legged on the floor, myopically gluing pieces onto his tiny town. He would've offered Ronan the glue gun. They often sat together in total silence, just like that, for hours at a time on nights like this.
But this wasn't Monmouth. And, when Ronan picked his way through the dark to the living room, it wasn't Gansey he found, but Declan.
