“Fucking relax,” Ilya said. He waved at a waitress nearby. “Can you get my friend a drink? What do you want, Hollander?”
Ilya motioned to the menu in front of Shane, and he looked down at the drink listing. Under the table, he felt Ilya's foot press against his own. Ilya stepped on his toes, quickly but firmly, and Shane felt his leg quiet down.
“I'll have an Old Fashioned, please,” Ilya said to the waitress, who had a wide-eyed expression that confirmed she had, in fact, recognized them.
She turned to Shane. “And what can I get you, Mr. Hollander?”
At least that was a success for step one of their plan: getting seen together in public. Step two was doing step one without killing or fucking each other. So far, so good.Or: Three times Shane and Ilya attempt to rewrite their own story, to themselves and to the public, to different results.

Summary
“Hey,” he says, careful and quiet. “Not that I’m not happy you’re here but…why are you here?”
Ilya doesn’t scoff or offer a sarcastic retort like he might on another day. Instead, he sounds tired as he burrows closer to Shane. “I missed you.”
It makes Shane’s heart twist painfully in his chest and he finds himself tightening his hold around Ilya. “I missed you too,” he says, using the hand he still has in Ilya’s hair to tug – just enough – so he can press a dragging kiss to Ilya’s temple. “You have a game tomorrow though, right?”
Ilya sighs. “I will drive home in the morning.”
“Okay,” Shane whispers because he wasn’t actually suggesting Ilya leave now.

In which Shane and Ilya keep driving two hours to get home until they don't have to.
