Summary
The world only spent a few weeks in that singular vision of utopia. Despite being back in reality, Ren still notices how everyone seems to have something he doesn't have— consistent feelings of happiness. It's fleeting, dancing in front of his eyes before vanishing into the distance. He pays so much attention to the smiles on the faces of people around him, notices how long it lasts before fading. Sometimes hours. Sometimes days.
Ren made a choice on February 2nd. The world still turns. The sun still rises, the sun still sets. Of course it does-- it's not as if anyone remembers anything different.

Summary
Akechi's face is framed by the light perfectly, chin tilted just enough to catch the angles of his jaw, his nose, the slope of his neck to his shoulder… The jellyfish in the glass surround him—larger than life.
Five photos Akira takes of Goro Akechi. And, one he doesn't.

A grin appears on his face, viewable from behind the bulky plastic of the camera. Between the warm streetlights seeping into the room from the window and the orange tones of the ring light set up behind him, Akira might be able to catch the flecks of freckles across Goro's face.

Summary
Akira pauses at this, replacing confusion with flatness. "You're right. Whatever suits you. We can get right to it: Why have you been dodging all of my communication?"
"Frankly, Akira, let me ask you a question instead. Why do you feel that I owe you communication?"
Goro keeps ghosting Akira throughout January. It's better this way. It has to be.

Summary
"You've placed all your bets on being gone, haven't you." Akira matches Goro's intensity, though his voice falls like a weighted blanket and not a knife.
Goro and Akira talk the morning of 2/3.

Summary
They’d spent the remainder of the evening like that, the shrill whine of cicadas outside lulling them both to sleep. Akira’s fingers had been partially entangled in Akechi’s hair when he woke up, and if they’d had a revelation about the trajectory of their relationship the following morning, neither of them acknowledged it.
“God fucking—fuck!”
Akira upended the stack of photos and watched them scatter across the floor, suppressing the urge to grind them beneath his heel.
By this time the following evening, Goro Akechi would be dead.
By this time the following evening, Akira Kurusu’s heart would be buried with him.
Written for Antithesis last year.

Summary
Akira Kurusu has seen Goro Akechi die twice and somehow still manages to go on with his life after the fact. So, when what by all accounts appears to be a dream figuration of the Akechi he remembers appears into the Velvet Room, Akira knows better than to fall for the same old trick.
Until Dream Akechi starts quoting Descartes. Then it's chaos.

Five years later, Ren is a moderately popular streamer and Akechi is a well-known author/model/talk show guest with a rabid fanbase. They haven't spoken— at least, not until Ren calls Akechi his celebrity crush on stream.

Summary
The Phantom Thieves have nearly secured their route through Maruki's Palace. There’s only one section left: The Twilight Corridor. A paradise where everything is perfect, and everyone is always smiling.
In order to enter that place, the Thieves must first prove they've "completed orientation" and can be "happy." There are points, there is a scoreboard, and they’re locked together in an experimental space where wishes can be granted by simply saying them aloud. Everyone has to individually earn 100 happiness points, or no one is leaving.
So what is “happiness,” really? How does Maruki define happiness? What the hell is a quantifiable happiness point? Is there any way around this? Don’t these stupid kids realize this is a trick to get them to fall back into the thrall of Maruki’s reality? And why can’t Goro earn any fucking points?
(Or: I've been watching too much Dropout Game Changer and I’ve built an Akechi torture chamber.)

Summary
On the first of January, Kurusu Akira wakes up in Akechi Goro's bed.
In the time they had spent together, he had known the beast that hid behind the Detective Prince's charm, but there was something magnetic about his spite that Akira found electric, so he flirted ever-closer to the storm that was Akechi Goro with eyes open and hand outstretched. Maybe, in the earlier days, he thought that he could endear himself to Akechi and avoid the murder plot, but the more he got to know him, the more impossible it seemed.
Now, things are different. They're in a world after Shido, and Akechi still breathes within Akira's reach.
