Summary
The stands grew riotous, the shouts deafening as the last fight of the night approached. Jinx looked down at the betting slip in her hand again. She had thought it stupid the first time she came. Gambling was Sevika’s chosen poison, not hers. She had only wanted to take a look, maybe stay a few minutes to catch the gory details, and leave before anyone noticed she had been there in the first place. "You’ll get your money’s worth and then some. She’s really good!" Curious, she had stayed longer than she had planned. At the end of the night, Jinx had gotten her money’s worth and then some, and she had returned to the mineshaft and laid down next to Isha with a strange sentiment blooming in her chest. Half-pride, half-exhilaration, all tinged in nostalgia and yearning for things she no longer had, dead and gone for years. Isha had noticed and had burrowed into Jinx’s arms, trying to chase away the shadows Jinx knew had lingered in her eyes.
She returned the next night and the one after, and the ones that followed, betting slip in hand and pink eyes searching the pit for her sister.

Something had changed tonight, weaving itself between the music's heavy bass and the dancefloor's colorful lights, tying its knot at the corner of her mouth when she smiled at him, all sharp teeth and unbridled excitement. It swirled around them as they danced, and he followed her along while she swayed and twirled into his space, her warmth all-encompassing, intoxicating. He had felt the walls crumbling, and he had let them, the rubble at his feet feeling like a fair exchange for a moment that should not exist, brief and frail and slipping through his fingers with every second.
It would hurt. Ekko knew it would hurt more than anything, but he wanted to be selfish, if only this once.
