“What can I help you with tonight ladies?” The smooth voice of one Pamela Isley asks them as she leans against the door frame.

“How’d the wedding go?” Deb has to ask. Because the papers made it clear something happened in Robinson Park last night but not exactly what.
Another grunt. “Joker burst out of the cake halfway through the vows. Harley broke both his legs. The second cake was very nice though.”
“Oh, good,” Deb says weakly.
Still, she considers as she walks home that evening, utterly oblivious to the fact that an intended mugger suddenly finds themselves in Waylon Jones’ shadow and flees, she is glad to know it had all worked out. It was always nice to hear her cakes had helped make a wedding special.

Harley raised her sandwich to her mouth, opened her red painted lips, and was just about to take a big ol’ bite when the ground shook with a deafening CRACK. The asphalt fractured around them, and from the fissures burst thick, thorny vines. The vines snapped around the car, the thorns sinking back as they wrapped around the detailed exterior of the vehicle, almost as if the earth itself didn’t want to scratch the paint.
Cass screamed.
Harley lowered her sandwich.
Butterflies fluttered.
“Harley Quinn!” a smoky, sultry, sorely missed voice screeched above the din.
Harley tossed her sandwich into Cass’s lap and turned around in her seat, even as the vines lifted the car into the air. Harley braced her hands on the headrest and grinned dopily up at the only woman who could pick her up when she was down (literally, it was difficult to get a grip on Harley, much less dangle her several meters above concrete in a tricked-out ride).

Harley snaps her head up at that, some of her earlier indignation returning. “I only broke the one bone!” she protests shrilly. “Wait, actually, no, it wasn’t even a break! I fractured it!”
Ivy tilts her head to one side, quietly assessing Harley with a shrewd gaze. “You’re not at all helping your case, Peanut.”

Ivy strides over gracefully then plops herself down right in front of the TV facing Harley, criss-cross applesauce style. “I heard that that up-and-coming mobster—the one who was hell-bent on giving me so much trouble—landed himself in the hospital just a couple days ago.”
Harley freezes for a split second, her crayon going still in her hand. “Uhh, yeah, I think I remember ya mentionin’ something about that guy.” She forces herself to keep going a beat later, shading in the last quarter of Batsy’s pretty pink cape and humming a jaunty tune under her breath like nothing’s awry—but she knows better than to think Ivy didn’t notice. Ivy always notices. “Sucks about him bein’ hurt and all, though.”

She hears a heavy sigh, followed by a familiar deadpan voice replying, “Harley, open the damn d—"
“EEEEEEEEEK!” Harley scrambles to undo the deadbolt, flinging open the door with a squeal to reveal— “PAMMY!”
“Pipe the fuck down!” comes a muffled but quite clearly disgruntled voice from down the hall—Cass, predictably. (Christ, but the mouth on that kid… )
“Eat a dick!” Harley screeches back.
Or: As it turns out, this whole 'emancipation' thing might just be a little more complicated than Harley originally thought...

(Batman-centric with a focus on 'best friend' Harley Quinn with very little actual Ivy but she's there in spirt. Also JLA is confused.)
She motions to a villains in a pile on the floor. They’re all visibly dizzy and tied together with rainbow streamers, but they’re listening intently as Harley stoops to their level and talks.
“-and then she bought me this necklace, isn’t it cute?” she says eagerly as she holds out the chunky beads around her neck.
“Very pretty,” the henchman nods approvingly. “You should buy her something too, keep the relationship mutually beneficial.”
“Oooh, like what? Because you know Pam, I can’t just get her flowers or something. She’d probably see that as a declaration of war.”
“Maybe a new jacket? Her old one is falling apart,” another henchman suggests. “You can even add little patches and stuff.”
Harley beams and claps his shoulder. “Oh Jerry, I knew I could rely on you. You have never steered me wrong. Except for that incident three years ago.”
Jerry winces. “Yeah sorry about that. Didn’t expect you to get blown up, glad you’re back to normal.”

"Was there a reason you were going to kill me?"
"You don't know?" Ivy asked.
"I could guess, but I don't want to suggest reasons for you to kill me."
"Now I'm curious," Ivy said, not quite a threat.
He'd walked right into that one.

“Isn’t he adorable?” Harley squealed, scooping up the furry interloper, who let out a yowl of protest that sounded like a retired coal miner with a three pack a day habit. It looked a bit like one, too, with its soot-gray stripes, yellow-stained fangs, and frazzled whiskers. “He’s a present from Selina!”
“She just…gave him to you? Without consulting me?” That didn’t sound like Selina. Ivy had heard her rants about people who sprung pets on their partners as surprises, complete with threats to surprise them with a trip to the vet sans anesthesia to ensure they couldn’t spread their stupidity by procreating. She’d also seen the 27 page forms anyone looking to adopt one of Selina’s precious foster babies had to fill out. There was no way Harley could possibly have come up with acceptable responses to page 5 (“Are you able to provide this cat with a calm and stable living environment?”), or page 11 (“Do your work hours allow you to give a pet sufficient attention?”), never mind page 25 (“Do you have any personal and/or professional enemies who might attempt to take a pet hostage for ransom and/or revenge? If so, please rate their chances of success on a scale of 1-5.”).

“Harley, look at this view!” Ivy called out from the balcony. Harley went skipping out on the balcony.
“—Wasn’t fuzzy was he? Wowww you can see the curvature of the earth!”
“Actually, Harl, that’s just a ski slope, though technically true. I’m going to take a nap.”
“Okay, Red. Fuzzy Wuzzy and I are going to look for a movie.

“Hey!” Harley growled as she entered the room holding a tray laden with food. She was dressed as a sexy nurse, though that didn’t make her glare any less intimidating as she stomped her foot. “Stop being mean to my babies!”
Selina rubbed her forehead. By now, she should be used to Harley’s level of chaos and nonsense, but somehow the woman continued to surprise her. At least the soup looked decent. “Did you really need the outfit?”
Holding the tray in one hand, Harley arched her back and jutted her hip as she mimicked a pin up poster. “Of course! It’s part of the care package!” She blew a kiss to Ivy. “Don’t you just love it?”
Not caring a wit about the fanservice, Ivy’s expression grew colder than the tundra. “Pick one of them to die or they all will.”
“Neither!” Harley carefully set the soup down on her side table before turning to Ivy. She bent forward and poked her sick friend on the cheek. “I’ll take good care of you in exchange.”

“I should’ve gone to a hospital,” Harley mumbles, almost to herself. “Shouldn’t keep showing up like this. Making it your problem.”
“You’re not a problem.” Ivy says it instantly. No hesitation. She leans back a little, trying to catch Harley’s eye again. “You’re never a problem, Harls. I just… I hate seeing you like this.”
Harley doesn’t respond. Her throat feels tight again, and she doesn’t trust her voice not to crack.
Ivy reaches for the blanket draped over the couch and gently lays it over Harley’s shoulders, hands brushing her arms with such care it makes Harley flinch. Not because it hurts, but because it’s soft. Because it’s safe. Because she’s not used to people being so gentle.
“You can stay,” Ivy says quietly, almost like she’s scared she’ll spook her. “As long as you need.”
Harley finally looks at her.
“I don’t want to be a burden,” she whispers.
Ivy lets out a breath, a quiet laugh, but it’s not mocking. It’s warm. Soft. Like the sound of someone who wants to be here, even when it’s hard.
“You never are,” she says.

vy woke up to the sound of footsteps inside her house. It was someone dragging themselves along with small sounds that proved whoever it was, they were injured. There was only one person whom her plants allowed to enter.
Ivy wiped away her tears and got up; this time it had taken very little time, perhaps he was angry. Perhaps she hadn't fully recovered yet.
Stepping into the hallway, she saw Harley limping and covered in blood. As always, Ivy went to wrap her in her arms, and Harley let herself fall into them, feeling protected.
“Let’s get you a bath, okay?” Ivy whispered, kissing her on the head.
“I did it, Red,” Harley said weakly.
Ivy pulled back for a moment to look at her. Her makeup was more smeared than usual and completely ruined, with multiple cuts and bruises on her face and all over her body, but she wore a bloody, radiant smile. “I did it, Pammy.”
Harley didn’t have to tell her what she had done. Ivy simply held her close to her chest. “I’m so proud of you.”

“You think I’m scared of people coming for me?” Ivy laughs bitterly. “I’m used to that. But them — my plants — they trust me. They only grow because they think it’s safe. And I’m not sure I can keep it that way. Not forever.”
Harley shifts closer.
“You know that’s not true,” she says. “You’re the safest place they’ve ever had. You’re the safest place I’ve ever had.”
Ivy looks at her.
And Harley smiles, just a little. Not a big one — not the kind with teeth and chaos — but the kind that means I’m not going anywhere.
