He knew he looked fine. That wasn’t the problem. It wasn’t even the fact that he was about to enter a room full of people who looked down their noses at him from atop their piles of money, or the fact that he had to sit through a dinner with them and make small talk, knowing he would be judged on every answer. It wasn’t even the fact that he would be entering that hall as Connor’s boyfriend, that be would be meeting Cornelius Rhodes as his son’s boyfriend.
It was the fact that it was a lie, a fake relationship to shut Connor’s dad up, that had Will’s stomach in knots, and Connor’s hand resting on his back as though it belonged there, like they’d done this many times before, had his heart threatening to leap out of his chest.

Summary
At first, it had just been Peter paying for their drinks and their meals, and Rafael let him because, although he didn’t think Peter had anything to apologize for, he also understood that having him say that wouldn’t change anything. So he quietly let Peter keep paying, knowing it made him more happy, more comfortable, to do so.
Then it turned into random gifts, little things Peter claimed he saw that made him think of Rafael; books, pens, notebooks, tie pins, cufflinks, all things that made sense on a whim, but added up to be quite costly. Still, Rafael didn’t protest, because Peter lit up at his acceptance of the gifts more than Rafael himself did at receiving them, and he couldn’t quite bring himself to change that.

She’d always tell him as she zipped his coat, or tucked his hat over his ears. Use that head of yours, papito. Make sure you know how people are going to react before you say anything. Don’t let your big brain become a big mouth. If only he had learned to think before he acted too. Then maybe he wouldn’t have ended up here, walking up the five flights of stairs to the apartment he may never call home again.
