Summary
In the spring of 1944, the 104th Medical Battalion of the United States Army is disbanded, and its men reassigned to various infantry companies in preparation for their invasion of occupied France. For First Lieutenant Novak, this is less than helpful, as he has so far met his platoon’s designated medic a grand total of twice, and has both times found Sergeant Winchester to be the optimum combination of reckless, arrogant, and downright insufferable so as to make cohesive platoon function near impossible. When the time comes to move out, however, Castiel has to reconcile himself to the fact that men are going to go down and trust that Dean Winchester may well be the only person who can put them back together again. update 11/25/18: the best piece of literary work that you will find. The third time reading it and I still sobbed like a baby. There is no possible way to read alongside these characters and not feel gutted when its over.
update 12/28/19: you think you remember just how great this story is until you read it again and it absolutely tears you to shreds and leaves you shaking with tears. confirmed: a book has never made me feel like this.
update 12/25/2020: Getting to reread this story was probably one of the highlights of this dark, confusing year. This story reopened and properly healed the wounds that the finale caused.
update 1/13/2025: gurl its probably been 10 years since you first read this story and it still is able to knock you onto your back on the 7th read. god no one will ever do it like them. -

“I think we should have a garden,” Cas says.
Dean looks up from his beer. He hasn’t had that much to drink, but Cas still has a vague look of unreality about him, a splash of living color that doesn’t fit in the bunker’s echoing stillness. Dean didn’t hear him coming. A lot of the time, Cas is so unobtrusive it feels like Dean has the bunker to himself, with Sam away.
Dean shakes his head to clear it. “A — garden?” he repeats.
