The first time Ilya coughed up a flower, he was kneeling over a toilet in the penthouse of the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, for entirely the wrong fucking reason to be kneeling over a toilet in Vegas.
There was no point in trying to pretend it wasn’t happening. He wasn’t an idiot. Hadn’t he seen his own mother waste away, coughing up clumps of clean white chamomile stained shocking scarlet? Hadn’t he known, on some level, that he was fated to follow in her footsteps one day, to throw his entire heart and soul into loving a person who would never — could never — love him back?
No, Ilya knew what this was. He also knew he’d never set foot on the ice again if anyone found out.
Blindly, he reached for the toilet paper, wiped his mouth, and then flushed the whole thing. Petals, too. He didn’t want to know what kind they were. Pizdets. It should’ve been a fucking maple leaf.

Ilya stared, brain not comprehending what his body already seemed to, that Hollander was dating-
“Rose fuckin’ Landry! How does the lamest guy in the League-”
He knew that smile. He thought it was for him, just for him. But it wasn't.
“No,” he whispered. His stomach spasmed.
“You good, Roz?”
Why would he- How could he-
They were holding hands…
“Rozanov? What the fuck?”
He jumped up from the table and stumbled for the front door, just barely making it through before the first mass of petals came up. He heaved as he ran, trying desperately to get away from the pavement, somewhere he could hide what was happening.
Unfortunately, his teammates had followed, because of course they would. He saw a photo of Shane Hollander holding hands with a movie star and promptly threw up.
Who wouldn't be curious?

Summary
Shocked was not the word. Ilya ran for his phone and immediately opened Google. If he wasn't going insane, then there had to be a logical explanation for what had just happened.
'Why is a flower coming out of my mouth"
The simple search yielded results that made Ilya turn his phone off and sit down. He was on the edge of the bed, sitting and staring at his own two feet. He didn't know what to do. The top result was as follows,
'The Hanahaki disease is something that is very rare these days, only being seen in about 2% of the population. It is also referred to as 'unrequited love sickness'. This is caused by someone experiencing unrequited love, causing the body to grow flowers in the lungs and throat. The disease is usually marked by a full flower coming out of the patient the first time it happens. This then begins the progression of the illness, with smaller parts of flowers being coughed up at first, and as the roots get bigger, the patient will begin to vomit up full flowers just as the first time.'
