“Yeah?” Tommy asked from the doorway. “I was hoping it wasn’t too predictable.”
“Are you kidding, I’m stoked,” Buck gestured broadly to the cabin. “National forest and a real bed and indoor plumbing? Lap of luxury, babe.”
Tommy smiled. “We’ve got food here for dinner, I thought we might want it to be just us tonight.”
“Absolutely,” Buck said, moving closer to pull him into a kiss. “Thank you for indulging my wish to see all the national parks at our advanced age.”
“You know I like exploring you with you,” Tommy said, his smiled pressed against Buck’s lips. “I got them to deliver some of the park stickers for your map already.”
“God you’re the best,” Buck sighed. “When do you need to get started on dinner?”

Summary
They've been big on hiking and camping since before they were married, and it's always been easy and enjoyable, even when conditions weren't ideal or something went wrong. If anything, if makes it easier to remember individual trips. It's a landmark moment in their relationship, a story to mark the passage of time. The Time Our Tent Leaked, The Time Tommy Almost Broke His Leg, The War With The Yellowjackets And Subsequent War Crimes Against The Yellowjackets, It Was Not A Bear No Matter What Evan Says, Weird Deer Guy Encounter, etcetera.
Buck is holding Robbie's hands and helping their son stand on his thighs while he lounges in a camping chair. “This is going to be ‘The Time Papa Lost His Mind Over A Giraffe,’” he decides, and Robbie's knees wobble and his eyes get big, so Buck’s get big and they smile big at each other.

He's at least got his uniform pants on to keep him a little warm, but the metal against his back is leeching it all away.
“This sucks,” Tommy says, and Buck laughs into the thin pillow. “This is why I didn't join the Coast Guard. The company's good, but the accommodations—”
“Terrible,” Buck agrees, grinning.

Tommy nods slowly, sliding his phone into his pocket. “Yeah, of course. How've you been?”
Buck winces and throws a couple of kernals of popcorn into his mouth. “Okay, I guess? Actually not. I don't know, it's—I’m fine.”
“Uh-huh,” Tommy says slowly, clearly not believing him. “Why don't you get back to me about that in a few hours?”
“Okay,” Buck says, holding the popcorn bucket toward him. “We can share.”
“Okay,” Tommy agrees, grabbing a couple pieces.

Summary
It’s been a little over three weeks since he dumped Evan, and in hindsight Tommy could’ve handled the whole situation so much better. They never talked about their long term plans, goals and wishes, or set any specific ground rules for their relationship, but Tommy always assumed they were on the same page.
They were enjoying their time together, for however long it was going to last. Six weeks, six months, a year. But at some point Evan was going to get bored of him, or he’d outgrow Tommy and start looking for somebody else. Somebody with the qualities Evan wanted in a long term partner.
OR: Tommy is a trainwreck. He still gets his man back. (Eventually.)

Tommy stares at the list for outside options until his eyes blur but. Nope, Evan’s name is still there on the transfer list, open for filling the gaping hole in…Tommy’s schedule.
Finally fills Evan's name into the empty shift slots, stares at it for a while longer and then bites the bullet. Prints the transfer request and takes it and the schedule over to Melton and slides them in front of him.
Melton reads them and then looks up at Tommy, eyebrow raised. "You want to work with your ex?"

Summary
By dawn there’s a statement from the chief’s office, announcing the successful rescue of the survivors of the Uno, without mentioning the 118 or Kinard. In fact it sounds like it was Chief Simpson’s plan all along.
Crisis averted, Melton thinks. Nobody is getting fired, and everything is going back to normal now.
Except that things do not go back to normal, because Kinard starts dating Buckley from the 118. Melton honestly doesn’t care about break room gossip or the LAFD rumor mill, but Buckley is kind of famous, and apparently his special brand of chaos is contagious.

Summary
Evan’s high school teachers describe him as chaotic and easily distracted. They’re probably right. His mind drifts and wanders instead of going from A to B in a straight line, and studying seems pointless when he can never recall a single detail he’s supposed to know.
Sometimes Evan feels like the walls are closing in, and no matter how hard he focuses on the lessons, at the end of the day all he remembers is that overwhelming sense of being trapped. Evan tries and tries, but the only thing he’s good at is making his classmates laugh. Neither his teachers nor his parents appreciate his talent.

Summary
After moving twice this year, and after losing Bobby, everything in Buck's life has an air of uncertainty and impermanence. Of course he picked this house because he liked it and could see himself living here, but part of him still feels like somebody is going to take it away from him as soon as he allows it to feel like home.
Buck wonders if Tommy somehow understands why he’s so reluctant to unpack his decorations, even though they haven't spoken about it. And if Tommy got him a plant on December 1st and a little fire engine on the 2nd, does that mean there’ll be another present tomorrow?

The guy looks over his shoulder and grins, which makes him look like a movie star instead of a mob enforcer. "Sal Deluca."
They get to the backyard, and there's another man there. He's got a shovel in the ground and is leaning on it while he taps on his phone screen with a frown.
"Babe, I don't think we need to dig that deep for a tree this small," he says, glancing up and then doing a double-take. Buck almost does one himself. The guy is big, maybe only his height but big. "Who's this?"
"Evan Buck Evan Buckley," Sal says, and Buck flushes, waving at the other man.
"Tommy," the man says, checking his hand before sticking it out to shake. "Sorry, I've been doing yard work all morning. You're the new neighbor, right?"
"Y-yeah," Buck says. "I just moved in a few days ago."
