Wednesday was not good at admitting what the passing days meant. Day one. Day fourteen. Day forty-seven. She told herself there was no attachment with decreasing conviction as the count climbed.
What will she find when she does find Enid? Is there enough of Enid left inside the wolf to recognize her voice, her smell, or the specific cadence of her footsteps?

“Okay,” the wolf took a breath and looked like she was steeling herself for something, before looking back up and meeting the brunette’s gaze, “Okay,” Another breath, “Wednesday, I’m going to send you something. I need you to not open it until my plane takes off, okay?”
Wednesday’s mind raced, wondering what the cryptic request could possibly mean. It was rare for the wolf to speak in such a way, more prone to overexplanations and oversharing.
“Why?” She asked simply, brown eyes boring into blue.
“I just,” Enid closed her eyes, “I need you to do this for me Willa,” the hands around Wednesday’s tightened, “Please.”

“Will we keep in touch?” Enid quietly asks, breaths coming out in soft puffs that Wednesday can feel against her face. “When I finally escape this town and go to San Francisco, will we still be friends?”
“Of course,” Wednesday tells her, and the lie curls itself around her throat until she is drowning, suffocating, and cannot breathe.
