Women adjusting their gloves and looking up at their dance partners with a smile that seems to run through their whole bodies; women sweeping around the ballroom, shivering almost imperceptibly when their hands meet their partners’; women clustering together on the edges of the room, giggling when the right man approaches them. Cressida’s attention gets caught on these smiles like a necklace on fine netting. The other young ladies tilt their heads, expose the long elegant lines of their necks, flutter fans to draw attention to their chests—all tricks Cressida learned early and learned well—and Cressida can’t look away.

“Shane?” Ilya asks again. “What happened?” His gloveless hand twitches and he lifts it a fraction of an inch towards Shane.
Shane tosses his own gloves to the ice and reaches forward, lacing their fingers together. “You took a bad hit,” he says, gritting his teeth against the fear clawing at his guts. “Flipped headfirst into the ice. Are you okay?”
Ilya groans in answer and squeezes his hand, though Shane can't tell if he meant to do that or not.
Suddenly, there are people all around them. Shane shifts protectively close before he realizes it’s the medical team.
“Hollander, get back to your bench,” someone says, but there’s no way Shane’s going. Even if he wanted to, Ilya’s gripping his hand like a lifeline, eyes finally locked on Shane’s face. Shane isn’t leaving him.

Shane’s parents are in Belize, he’s got an emergency dental surgery, and Ilya drives two hours from Ottawa without hesitation. What follows is 24 hours of post-op care, an alarming amount of feelings said out loud, and the mortifying realization that yes, he really did call Ilya a “hot lion.”
At least the nurse was cool about the whole secret boyfriend thing.
