Summary
“...I am not Phainon.”
The words felt punched out of Khaslana’s chest. He felt like he was betraying Mydei by confessing.
“No,” Khaslana back-tracked with a tired shake of his head. “I am… no longer Phainon.”
“...You never change in my eyes.”
A finger curled under Khaslana’s chin, preventing him from attempting to shy away from Mydei’s intense, yet adoring gaze. A rare smile lifted the corners of Mydei’s lips as he stared into Khaslana’s undeniably golden eyes, as opposed to the usual ocean blues Phainon had.
“You’re still my Phainon. My queen. My loving wife. Nothing changes that.”
Even in Phainon's new, human life, he still bears the world's burdens. Unlike in the past thirty-three million cycles, Mydei fulfills a promise that was said a million times before. In Castrum Kremnos' library, Mydei grounds Phainon back into reality.

In hindsight, when Cipher told him to ‘shove the coreflame up his ass’, she may not have meant it literally.
She had seemed a little stressed at the time, her face pale and bleeding, walking with a limp in her gait. When she shoved Kephale’s coreflame into his hands, she told him to protect it with his life and not ask any stupid questions.
“Is this really Kephale’s coreflame?” Mydei asked.

Mydei allowed the smallest smile to tug at his lips, lowering his voice just enough to make it sting like a secret meant for Phainon alone. “It means,” he said slowly, “I chose not to heal them.”

“Partner, I have one last request,” he said numbly.
Caelus’s jaw snapped shut and he turned to Khaslana. “Uh, sure, what’s up?”
He thought the words would catch in his throat, to try and bury themselves within his burned flesh. That fear or regret would hold him back. But no, they puffed out, withered and dour. Inevitable.
“Take me away from Amphoreus. Please.”
