When he’d been a boy, he’d loved, he’d cared, he’d adored, before the world had suggested to him that that was something to be ashamed of. He’d cared for insects, he’d tended flowers, he’d had wonder in his eyes when he saw new flowers sprouting and stars in the sky. The world had been an endless source of awe when everything he’d encountered was new and fresh. Though he’d walked the same pavements to nursery as a boy, they had never looked the same twice, the moss in between the cracks of the tiles looking a little different day by day. As a boy, he’d loved the world that surrounded him, long before he knew enough about what went on around him to really understand what it was, what the pace of life was.
And yet, there was something about being held in another’s arms, their lips to his temple, that brought that feeling back.

He was so drunk he could barely stand, and even he could feel the tension between himself and the man that was stood opposite him.
The man looked no better than Matty himself felt, with his bleached hair - badly done, he couldn’t help but notice, oily with the night and raked back by his fingers - and yet he couldn’t tell whether he was drawn in or repulsed by the hate in his smirk. He had one hand clenched in the bloke’s shirt, and the other balled into a fist, ready to strike - if only he could remember why they were in that position in the first place.

The van was a state, and he looked as though he was half attempting to use the bass drum as a fucking pillow, though somehow the smile on his face made him look almost comfortable.
He’d kicked off his shoes somewhere in the chaos, and with one look Ross knew that the shirt he was wearing wasn’t his own; he luxuriated in the back of the Transit van as though it was a first-class seat on an Emirates flight, and that generally only came after one thing.
