Tony casts him a withering look, gets up, and returns from the kitchen with an ice pack wrapped in a dish towel. “This should help with the swelling.”
“Oh, goodie.” Peter accepts the ice pack with an eye roll. “I love using these things every day. Love ’em more than Ned.”
“Are you usually this much of an asshole when you’re sick, or is this just special treatment for me?”
“You said I’m not supposed to feed your ego, Mr. Stark.”

Who even gets sick on their birthday? One (1) sticky boy, apparently. Tony swears Peter Parker is a walking, (over)talking, sneezing curse because before he knows it, he, too, is sick on his birthday. In which the zombie apocalypse has descended upon Earth, and Peter and an unlikely friend find their way into safety, and the arms of a family in this new normal.
There was a time people would’ve called Peter an optimist, maybe even rightly so. He probably would’ve agreed back then, too—before the gray skin, glazed white eyes, and the smell of rotting flesh had become his new normal. Now, he would call himself a realist. If Aunt May and Uncle Ben were here, he wouldn’t be so lost. No, he certainly wouldn’t be so lost. Anyone would be better off not alone, especially at thirteen. But he didn’t have them now. He hadn’t had them from the beginning of the apoc… all this.

Summary
Tony is many things to Peter- childhood hero, superhero mentor, unacknowledged father-figure, somehow turned family friend. The trouble is that none of these titles have much weight in the Real World.
Tony can do a whole lot to protect Peter when he's in the Spider-Man suit, not so much when he gets accused of cheating at school when May is stuck at work and asks Tony to step in.
