“You can stay with me if you want to. I won’t allow anyone in, so you’ll be safe. I know my house isn’t much compared to—”
“I’d love to stay!” Jiang Yanli interrupts happily. “As long as you don’t mind.”
Wen Qing’s lips turn up, making her heart skip a beat. “I don’t mind.”

“You’re so annoying, Lan Zhan.” He doesn't entirely succeed in keeping the fondness out of his voice.
Lan Zhan tugs on his hair slightly in retaliation. It doesn’t hurt, but Wei Ying still cries out. “Aiya, Lan Zhan! Stop hurting this poor man! I’m being tortured!”
“Would you like me to stop?” Lan Zhan asks, with that irritating tone of his voice that Wei Ying can already recognize as: being a little shit.
“Now he’s threatening me! Lan Zhan really is the worst.”
“Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan says, his voice back to that soft tone Wei Ying loves so much. “It’s my turn.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Wei Ying flops his hands around. “Go ahead. Try to be a little more original this time.”
Wei Ying gets locked into the university’s library on a Friday night, without electricity. Thankfully, he’s not alone. Now he’ll just need to come up with ways to pass the time with Lan Zhan, in total darkness. -

Summary
You must never show your magic to anyone except for your aunt, his mother’s voice reminds him.
It’s hard to keep that in mind while a man is being executed right in front of him, on the grounds that he’s a magician. Baz knows the man is not a magician, he doesn’t feel any traces of magic coming from him, but he can’t do anything about it.
He watches, alongside the group of townspeople surrounding him, the man getting dragged to the middle. Above them, on the castle balcony, the king is speaking. David Pendragon. Apparently, the queen was killed by magic, or “sorcery” as the king calls it, and since then magic has been punishable by death. That’s what his mother told him, anyway.
When the executioner lifts his weapon (it looks like a big axe), Baz looks away. His gut tells him to do something, but he promised. He’s not planning on dying anytime soon.

Summary
“What the fuck?”
There’s a cat in our house. It sits on the counter and stares at me. It’s black all over except for its feet. Do cats have feet? Paws. Its paws are white.
We don’t have a cat.
I have no idea how it could’ve come in. I’m pretty sure all the windows were closed, and we don’t have a dog door. Or a cat door.
Baz has already left for work, so he must’ve missed it.
“Uhm, hi?” I say to the cat. It meows back, almost sarcastically. Cats can’t understand sarcasm, can they?
Instead of grabbing breakfast, I get my phone and send Baz a text. I hear a ping from the kitchen table that sounds a lot like Baz’ text tone. The cat is still looking at me.
I turn towards the table and yes, there’s Baz’ phone. Strange. He’s never forgotten it before.
Wait. I look back at the cat suspiciously. “Did you do anything to Baz?”
If I didn’t know better, I would say the cat just rolled its eyes. But that’s not possible. I think.
It meows again. Guess that means “no” or “I have no idea what you’re saying”.

Summary
The evening before her marriage, she runs towards the forest. She didn’t tell anyone, they would’ve stopped her.
From a very young age, everyone in the village learns the stories of the dark forest. She’s heard it countless times: Never go into the dark forest. No one has ever returned.
But Agatha is desperate, and maybe, just maybe, she wouldn’t mind not being able to come back to the village.
Her dark red cloak flutters behind her as she sprints to the edge of the forest, jumping over rocks and tall grass. The sun is setting, the sky a beautiful orange colour, but she can’t stop running. It won’t be long until someone finds out she’s missing.
Finally, she reaches it. She stops, out of breath, to lean against a tree. The border to the dark forest is clear: the long, light grass stops right before the tree line, turning into a blue layer of leaves on the forest ground.
Agatha watches the line with fear in her heart. She doesn’t know what’s waiting for her in there, but nothing could be worse than spending an entire life married to someone you don’t love.
She takes one last deep breath, and steps over the border.

What if the twinkle twinkle little star moment went on a bit longer?
“I feel kind of drunk, though,” Baz says, gripping his other hand.
“Drunk on power?” he asks.
Then, the weirdest thing happens: Baz starts giggling. “Shit, Snow. Stop talking. This is embarrassing.”
Simon can’t stop staring. He has seen Baz smile genuinely a few times before, and sometimes he even heard him laughing with Dev and Niall. But this is different. First of all, it’s Simon. Baz doesn’t let his guard down around him, he never does. The rare times Baz had smiled in his company were always short, and after that Baz would keep his distance. Second, he’s giggling. Baz doesn’t giggle. He’s an evil vampire and a complete git. He doesn’t giggle. Something doesn’t compute in his head.
The universe around them is beautiful; a bright night sky, twinkling stars everywhere. But his eyes stay on Baz.
“Do you want me to pull back?” he asks, his magic still dripping out of him. It’s really weird, he can feel his own magic inside of Baz. Strangely, it also feels kind of nice.
“No,” Baz says. “I want to look at the stars.”

It starts with a yellow tulip.
When Simon wakes up on the couch for the fifth day in a row, he doesn’t feel like getting up. What’s the point? He doesn’t have anything planned (as usual) and Baz has classes. Penny is gone for two weeks to visit Agatha, so he’s on his own.
He supposes he could visit his therapist, but he’s been ignoring their appointments for a while and it’d be awkward.
After a moment of consideration, he decides staying on the couch is the better option. He reaches for the remote on the coffee table but stops when he notices the flower. Simon doesn’t know much about flowers but he recognizes the tulip. It’s yellow and wrapped in plastic.

“Yes, Mrs. Grimm?” Simon answers, still looking at Baz questioningly, but he doesn’t seem to know what this is about.
She stays at the bottom of the stairs and says: “Could I talk to you for a minute?”
“Uhm, sure,” Simon says. He throws Baz another look, who reaches out and squeezes his hand once. Then he disappears upstairs. Great.
Simon lingers for a moment, eyes on the hallway that swallowed Baz up, and then slowly descends again. He’s unsure of what this is going to be, and is almost scared to make eye contact with Mrs. Grimm, who’s smiling at him warmly.
She seems to sense his nerves. “Don’t worry, I am not planning on giving you the boyfriend talk.”

Carry On – fun
The first time the song comes up on the radio, Shepard says: “Oh, I love this one!”
No one replies. Agatha and Penny are asleep in the back, next to Simon (who’s silently staring out of the window), and Baz is in front, next to Shepard.
“I’ve never heard it before,” Baz says finally, when the song’s almost over.
Shepard takes his eyes off the road for a second to look at him. “It’s pretty catchy.”
“Hm,” Baz replies, not interested in conversation. He’d rather be asleep as well, but someone should keep an eye out for stray vampires coming after them. He’s not sure Simon would notice anything at the moment, and Shepard is a Normal. That leaves Baz.
