Summary
Two years after the fall of the netherbrain, Astarion is running the colony of vampire spawn in the Underdark alongside his siblings. The situation is tense, but the spawns need each other. With 7000 spawns to look after, there isn't much time for personal relationships. Even so, there's one person from his past Astarion wishes to see: Sebastian. The sweet human he lured all those years ago. He yearns for him, but Sebastian is no where to be seen. Astarion accepts he'll never see him again, until one day, when a chance encounter brings them together. Their reunion, though fraught, stirs up old feelings in the pair. But Astarion's guilt holds him back from being truly vulnerable with Sebastian.

But then, all of a sudden, a shiver ran through the half-elf's body. [...] His tadpole reached out its fingers to the drider. And his tadpole responded. For a split second, their entities seemed to mingle. Tav could see inside the drider. His mind was something he had never seen before. It was as if he was looking into a glass palace. A palace with thousands of mirrors reflecting each other back. An echo ran through the surroundings, a screech. But there were other things. Hidden things. Things that eluded Tav when he tried to reach for them.
He realized that the drider's mind was fractured. Broken into so many pieces it was impossible to know if they had ever fit together.-----
As they watch a convoy of Absolutists, Tav is injured and left behind. He has no choice but to pose as a devout True Soul in order to survive.
As soon as his gaze settles on Kar'niss for the first time, Tav is fascinated by the drider. He won't admit it to himself, but the curiosity he feels might just contain at least a spark of attraction.
He teams up with the drider to make the journey to Moonrise Towers.
