“I didn’t come up with the name,” Robin says, voice half muffled by the thick fabric of her khaki cargo shorts, “It’s kind of dumb, I know.”
Vickie’s hand settles on her nape, runs a path down the slope of Robin’s shoulder before she tugs, pulling her upright, “I like it,” she says, “It suits you.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” Vickie says. Her fingers curl around the baby hairs at the base of Robin’s skull, drawing mindless letters against her neck, patterns undeterminable. Robin doesn’t know how to breathe through the biting, sharp-toothed sensation that closes around her chest - the jaws of a strange beast pressing its canines into her heart, holding it steady. A small part of her wants to scream, to run and run and run - away from Vickie, from her smile, from her honest words and sun-warm touches; from the terrifying desire to kiss her. She thinks she understands, now, why Mr. Hauser left all those years ago. “And, well, I like listening to you talk. It’s silly, but it feels like you’re next to me, sometimes - like it’s just us.”
