Nyota shivered with something more than sympathy. She remembered alternate Sulu’s grip on her chin, his arms against the bare skin of her waist–and tugged at the hem of the long-sleeve top she’d donned like armor to leave her quarters. Leonard's voice shook as he stared down at his hands, eyes glazed over and lost in the oppressive memory of that place. He continued, “I got the injuries treated but that was all hypos and light regens, barely anything personal, nothing human about it.”

Nyota can't sleep after returning from the mirror universe, and her visit to the doctor's quarters takes an unexpected turn when she finds she wasn't the only one seeking the good doctor's support in the aftermath. -

McCoy was no Vulcan: he knew he couldn't repress his desires completely, knew it wasn’t healthy to do so; he acknowledged them, indulged in fantasies of strong slender fingers gripping his throat as he touched himself, let his bickering with Spock cross the line into flirtation. He was content to have private desires stay private, decided the risk was just not worth it, and it probably would have gone on that way forever if it weren’t for their unexpected adventure on Sarpeidon.

Leonard McCoy learns something about himself early in the 5-year mission, and tries to convince himself it doesn't matter. Events (and Spock) conspire to test that theory - it could mean more to the two officers than either had imagined.

Betazoids have been present in Human society for decades. Leonard McCoy, raised by a Human father and a Betazoid mother, is a rarity, but not an anomaly. Other than the occasional mental burnout from working in medicine, he gets along just fine.
That is, until he enlists in Starfleet and meets someone who is an anomaly, a half Vulcan who can’t seem to leave him alone and threatens to make an even bigger mess in his life than the one he went to the Academy to get away from.
