Even if they did fit together like puzzle pieces, and stick together like glue. Even if there were times when they would look at each other and Rosemary would think, surely, surely the feeling must be mutual. Rosemary looked up, catching Laura's eye.

It was something that had happened probably a thousand times before, but that it morning in particular, it’d struck Rosemary just how bloody lucky she was to have found Laura. She’d looked at her and seen all the jokes and the laughter, the quarrels and the kerfuffles, the near death experiences, the hours of working together side by side, chattering like magpies or simply enjoying each other’s company. Rosemary looked at Laura and saw happiness. Her happiness.

And that woman… before today, Laura hadn't thought about her in years, decades possibly.
Did she remember her name? She hadn't been told it, she'd remember that clear as day, but she did remember catching a glimpse of the list of arrests for that night.

She’d raised Rosemary all on her own like it was the easiest thing in the world, taking her hither and yon and imbuing her child with both the urge to wander and a fierce loathing of being tied down that had yet to be fully quelled.
Even once Rosemary had been working at the university for decades and had come to love her work with a passion, god, she’d had to get away nearly every weekend. Taken all her holidays, her sick leave, sometimes she’d scoop up her mother and they’d fly to Morocco, or Spain, and that would take the edge off for a few weeks.
No longer. Now, her mother was getting too old, and Rosemary had Laura. It was odd, somehow. She adored traveling with Laura, but at the same time, when she was with Laura, she really didn’t need to. It was like that urge, the urge to be somewhere else, to explore, to be out there doing something, it was like that was already being sated, somehow, by Laura.

Pain wracked Lesso's body. Furry bodies littered the floor of the Great Hall, covering nearly every inch of floor from end to end. Seemingly impervious to magic, the pygmy shrews had come like a wave, interrupting the school assembly and resisting the students' panicked efforts to hold them off. Blasts of fire and magic simply bounced off the masses of tiny teeth and claws, ricocheting back at the fleeing children.
Dean Dovey had managed to corral both the staff and students out, closing the door behind them and transforming it into a wall.
Lesso stayed behind. She could take care of this, no problem. The kids simply weren't strong enough. With the aid of a minor shielding spell, she tested their defenses. Fire, water, wind, and pure magic. Nothing worked. She had thought that, with her far greater experience, her magic would prove more effective than the kids'.

Should she be looking at this? Maybe she should put it back. But no, Laura wouldn't have sent her to look in said sock drawer if she'd minded Rosemary knowing about the ring.
Rosemary pulled the socks onto her feet, grabbed the box, and crawled away.
"Laura," said Rosemary, finally emerging back into the blissful warmth of the lounge. Laura was sitting on the mattresses by the fire, back against the couch, mending a hole in some trousers.
"Hmm?" She looked up.
"What is this?" Rosemary held up the box.

Lesso had been trying to make it as a ranch hand, all dressed up like as a boy like she was now, and Dove had been just another over-trimmed prissy stuck-up rancher’s daughter, flirting with the help. Except she wasn’t just another rancher’s daughter, was she?

Rosemary should have been prepared. She should have known something like this would happen. Given the amount of police officers she and Laura came into contact with on a regular basis, it was only a matter of time before their luck would run out and they would see him. And they did, see him.

Somebody gets murdered and the detective leading the investigation is Laura's ex husband, Nick. And the other detective is one Dan Scott from Midsomer Murders. But he’s not there much.
Edit: Dan Scott is not there and I really thought he would be, so so sorry Midsomer Murder people who's tag I blatantly abused. They do talk about him quite a bit though, if that helps.

Laura said nothing to that, and Rosemary stormed across the lawn in a right old fury. The bloody bloody nerve of that girl, ruining the poor man’s happiness like that, to say nothing of the fact that she’d probably put Rosemary and Laura out of a job. Speaking of Laura, she didn’t seem to be with Rosemary.
