He Xuan was unknowable, and a paradox at that: For the longer they had played at being human, the further down they had to bury themself; every day of wearing a mask became an extra layer atop that shroud sealing off their humanity. And, moreover, if every human was a universe, then He Xuan was a dense, warped, and unwieldy multiverse, having consumed so very many.
To eat a soul, to digest its nutrients, powers, and attributes, it was different than just absorbing the excess energy of its destruction. There was fission, and there was fusion, and then there was He Xuan.

"Isn’t it odd, Wang Dui, how grief distills with time? How it dries up to a mere trickle?” Ol’ Kan looked out to the distant storm at sea. “Mortals mourn death the most, but so often forget to mourn themselves. Every moment we die and every moment we are born anew. I have always been here; I never left. And yet, because your youth is buried out in the past, I am as good as dead.”
