Clara bit her lip. She had been turned out of her home, replaced with another orphan. She left the Saburovs willingly to protect them, only to be abandoned as thanks for her good deed. Her parents had given her nothing, not even a roof over her head. But the Bachelor was an idiot. He didn’t remind her of these things to hurt her. He reopened wounds in ignorance. He had no idea Clara had been disowned, and she wasn’t about to tell him.

Dankovsky finds out that Clara has been living on the streets after being disowned and takes her in. Along the way, they must work together to stop the Saburovs from destroying the Cathedral.

Summary
He’s about to cross the bridge when he hears crying - a child, no doubt, he realises, and scans his surroundings. He’d done his best to numb the instinct during those twelve days, tried to wipe himself clean of the guilt when he’d brushed past sobbing children on their knees, curled up in alleys and dying of plague their mothers and fathers gave them. He’d reasoned with himself, as many times as he’d needed, that he would save more lives if he endeavoured for a cure, rather than waste time comforting sick little children.
In which the Bachelor draws comparisons between himself and a sick, lonely Changeling.

absolutely insane reference filled poem of a story about daniil dankovsky and artemy and yet mostly just daniil. Very delightful. So many references that went straight over my head but SO good. Daniil gets the plague at one point near the beginning too
