Liked it when he could see the gleam of Jamie’s white teeth in the streetlamps, liked when the corners of his eyes crinkled. He liked it especially when the smile was followed by a chuckle. A sound he never heard in the clubhouse anymore. The less he heard it in the clubhouse, the more he wanted to hear it during their morning sessions, and he began to wonder about what he could do to prompt a smile, coax a laugh.

Jamie Tartt is twenty-six years old when he stands at a party, watching the people he loves most, and realises he’s become utterly soft. The realisation makes him freeze for a moment, short enough that no one seems to notice. As terrified and angry Jamie would have been even three years ago to learn this about himself, Jamie today finds some peace in the thought. The past three years have been a time of change and growth for everyone at Richmond, and he’s sure they’ve changed for the better. He’s certainly changed for the better. What’s unnerving about it is that he can’t quite put his finger on when this happened, or how. Was it Ted’s influence, or the absence of his father’s? Was it the result of finally having a team behind him that he trusted implicitly, and who trusted him in turn? Was it because of Roy?
