Then he counts Nicolò’s breaths in Greek, because that at least he can do in Greek, more or less, and it takes more concentration than the others, so he counts and counts and counts.
Yusuf does not know how to count Nicolò’s breaths in Genoese. He wonders if Nicolò counted his breaths, when he was sleeping.
