You do not love women.” Madeline opens her mouth to protest but is silenced by the look in her mother’s eyes. “This is not a discussion, dear. This is something you are going to learn here and now. We will not have this conversation again. Do you understand?” Madeline nods, shakily. She doesn’t understand why, but she certainly knows what her mother means. And she knows to follow the rules.
Character study of Madeline throughout her life. She and her mom are both painfully aware that she's a lesbian but they're trying to pretend that's not real--lots of stuff with her mother, lots of low self-esteem depressing sex with men. MadHel, but it's gonna take a sec and most of it will be repression and yearning.

The line cuts before she can finish her sentence or respond, and she’s stood blinking at the door. Not exactly rude, just… abrupt. Helen makes her way upstairs, forming an opinion of Madeline which, so far, leans to the unflattering. Brisk, overly assertive, probably a nightmare to have a balanced conversation with.

Helen finds herself babysitting Madeline's young daughter. It's supposed to be a one-time quick fix, but the women can't stay away from one another.

Summary
The first bi-yearly Extermination Day has ended in utter disaster, and now Lute must live with the consequences of her and Adam's hubris. At least, until she learns that Lilith can perform magic related to time travel. Deciding to take a leap of faith, Lute sends her memories of everything up until a month after the failed extermination BACK to the past. She cannot undo the events of the original timeline, and she has only one shot at creating a new divergent one. The question is... will she succeed?
