It wasn’t just the idea of being rejected. He could deal with rejection. It was the possibility of ruining what they already had. It would change how Thursday thought of him and he could deny it all he liked but Morse cared deeply what Thursday thought of him. He'd imagined over and over the disgust, and worse, the pity. He saw it so clearly that it was like it had already happened and so he could never have asked.

Jopson's kindness felt just as humiliating as if he’d responded with disgust. More humiliating, really. Disgust, amusement. They’d both be perfectly reasonable reactions to discovering that the first lieutenant of the ship on which you were serving was, with concerning regularity, having dreams of being held, and caressed and loved and was spilling in his nightclothes from them. Ned felt that it definitely reflected poorly on his command, and general character, that Jopson seemed utterly unphased by finding a semen-stained nightshirt shoved under his mattress. He felt that Jopson pitied him.
