    Summary

"You want me to leave you covered like this?" Arthur nudges the hem of John's shirt with his fingertip.

"Embarrassin'," John whispers, "Bein' all soft."

    "Does it feel good though?"

John swallows hard before nodding, slinging one arm over his face while the other settles beside him, fingers clenching in the bedroll.

"... Well, maybe you'll like it anyway?" Arthur says quietly as he generously coats his fingers with the gel, setting the tin aside and resting his free hand on John's inner thigh, "Ready?"

"Don't say it like that," John mutters, "Just gon' make me nervous again."

    "... Why you nervous?"

"Dunno… What if it doesn't work?" John swallows and rubs his forehead with his wrist, "What if I like it too much?"

    Summary

Arthur has stood on clifftops, staring off the edge of the world and wondering how long it would take him to hit the ground. One more step, out into emptiness where nothing matters anymore, but he’s always too weak to take it, always hesitating.

Clinging to a life that doesn’t cling back.

He’s waded into riverbanks, the current strong and vicious, tugging at his clothes and trying to draw him in. Thought about how easy it would be to go limp and let the water take him. Let the river close over his head, blackness all around— weightless and boneless and nothing is his fault anymore.

Thought about how easy it would be, nothing to do but breathe in water, close his eyes, and drift away. This isn’t anything like that.

Then Arthur glances up, and sees him coming over the ridge. It’s too far, really, and he’s wearing a bandana over the bottom half of his face, but Arthur would know those eyes anywhere. Across canyons, from miles away. In the dead of night, the sky black and starless, it doesn’t matter; Arthur can still feel him watching.

    Summary

“I’m no good,” John says, voice cracking. “Why d’you even…” The words for what they are stick.

Once something is real it’s easier to lose.

Arthur pulls John’s face back around, shifting his grip to one side of his jaw and raising the other to mirror it, tilting him firmly towards Arthur’s soft blue eyes. “Y’mean why do I love you?”

    He says it almost angry.

John remembers Arthur’s lips in his hair while he lay in that cot in the mountains, wrapped in bandages and half-insane with fever. “Love you,” they’d mouthed against his skull, through unwashed hair and flecked by blood when pulled away. “Love you John Marston, you stupid bastard.”

Now, he shudders apart like a fresh-shot hare. And then he nods, small.

A gift for my new friend cokobi, who gave me the prompt for this fic: an insecure John receiving reassurance from Arthur, after some jealousy regarding Charles. (Note that there's no Charles bashing here, because in this house we love Charles.)

    Summary

From the moment of his birth, Arthur Morgan’s life was never going to be an easy one.

And if that doesn’t hit Arthur like a sucker punch to the gut. He ain’t used to people caring to know him beyond what he puts on the table. Dutch and Hosea have always appreciated his ability to aim and shoot a gun, intimidate a mark, get a job done. Miss Grimshaw is grateful for the chores he does around camp without complaint. And John – well, John’s always just seemed to lap up whatever Arthur is willing to give him. The idea that John wants more – wants to really know Arthur, to see him, a part of him no-one else is interested in, it flares up some kind of unfamiliar fear inside of Arthur’s chest.
