Summary
F.A. 560. While the War of Wrath rages in Beleriand, the House of Olwë attempts to assemble a more complete account of the First Kinslaying than what seems to be the common version these days.
("I feel like we could have done a better job passing it all along in song. But it's so much easier to lament for murdered kin and lost ships than it is to, to… Lament for my niece's harpoon collection which she can't look at any more. Lament for my husband being kicked by a panicking horse and not seeking a healer until it was too late because he was trying to help people. Lament for my daughter's expression when she talks about the drownings. Lament for coming to regret a mass grave.")

Summary
When Elrond learned the choice of his daughter, he was silent, though his heart was grieved and found the doom long feared none the easier to endure.
– Return of the King, Appendix A, The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen, J. R. R. Tolkien
Or, Arwen tells Elrond of her betrothal to Aragorn. He – doesn’t take it well.
---
Her father! Her dear, dear world of a father. As ineluctable as the seasons and as unknowable. She was made in his likeness. They were a mirror and its reflection, spiralling on for eternity. A virus self-replicating, an aberration; their riverine bloodline nothing but a glitch in the great fabric of the universe, perpetuating itself over and over in the hopes of resolving its own paradox once and for all. The line of the peredhel – Arwen and Elrond and Elrond and Elwing and Elwing and Dior, all the way back to Lúthien herself – a poem of fixed meter and rhyming pairs, each generation following the same pattern time after time after time. No hope for escape.
Arwen had to get out; she had to break the mirror. That was the only way any of it would end. Could he not see that? He had to. He had to.

Finrod and Fingolfin, an Age after their deaths, look back on their assorted triumphs and tragedies, compare cairn locations, mourn the kingdoms of Men they raised up in Beleriand, and conspire around a novelty cake.
~~
“I came to terms with my own betrayal a while ago,” said Finrod. “If you’re correct, it was only the minor refrain of a long-running and very disappointing theme.”
“I don’t mean to open old wounds,” said Ñolofinwë. “Although I suppose we’ve been doing little else since I sat down in this chair. It’s a very comfortable chair, at least.”

Summary
In the wake of the Quenya ban, a diplomatic mission to Doriath is arranged under cloak of secrecy. Two kings in Beleriand, one new and one old, have a volatile encounter.
~~~
Thingol, shocked, drew in a sudden breath through tight-clenched teeth. “He is the very image of Finwë!”
“I warned you of that earlier,” said Galadriel quietly, her smile returning. “The resemblance never failed to madden Fëanor, by the way.”
Sympathy for mad, dead Fëanor was not what he expected to feel today, but he felt it nonetheless. A beloved memory from a life long before the sun now rode into his kingdom under plain daylight. His mind whirled. He could not reconcile it.
Summary
The gown Viserra wore to meet the Khal was lavender silk, to bring out her lilac eyes. It felt too smooth, too slippery against her skin. Once, she had been a pretty little girl, doll-like and frail, with a shy, gap-toothed smile. But she was a woman grown now, two-and-twenty, and over a decade of running and hiding and fighting for every scrap of bread, respect, and recognition had worn her hard and bare.
(Fourteen years after the Usurper's dogs destroyed her family and sent them fleeing into exile in Essos, Viserra Targaryen barters what little she has left on a desperate alliance with the Dothraki, determined to bring herself and her sister Daenerys home)
Summary
The old septa died in Bitterbridge, in a dark, shuttered room. She had been ailing when they reached the town, plagued by a sharp, nagging cough Dunk did not like the sound of, likely brought on by several days of rainy travel. They had been headed northeast, towards King’s Landing, for the landed knight they had served for the past three years had little need of septas after his daughters came of age to wed.
Well, Dunk had been more maidservant than septa, it was true, and mayhaps she had never really said the right vows, but it hardly mattered, did it? She wore grey robes, for white showed stains too readily, and carefully veiled her hair, which she kept cropped to her chin to make it easier to tend to. Septa Arla always said a maid of her size would always stand out and attract trouble, so she ought to let the Seven be her shield.
Summary
The wind blew against Fingolfin’s face as he took his usual path among the dark tents flung like burnt charcoal against the endless white. Not for the first time he wondered where he was leading these people. His father had claimed his crown by promising the Noldor safety, abundance and light. He had kept his word. What promises could Fingolfin make now to these starving, disheartened people? What save darkness and revenge?
Trapped in a long snowstorm on the Helcaraxë, Fingolfin fights against famine and despair.
Summary
“Apologies, I had not known that Elwing outlined a curriculum for their education in her last moments,” Maglor retorts. His voice breaks, still recovering from Sirion. For a moment, he allows himself to imagine that this is where Maedhros will silence him with a kiss, will offer hot lemon water with so much honey that it is thick and golden as syrup, a cup pressed to his lips as it was those days in Himring, when he still held the Gap and had glory at his tongue.
“Those were far from her last words.” Maedhros smile is vicious, a thing with teeth. “As I said. She thought they were dead, and it was not an unreasonable assumption. She never believed me when I told her how we looked for her brothers.”
Summary
"Maedhros has nothing to say, less to give. He looks Elwing in the eye, stares right into the face of a catastrophe of his own making. There’s no forgiving or forgetting, but it is only the two of them on that island. Both their lives, collapsed into this yawning whole. Their very existence is now an exercise in the capacity for empathy and identification. On the island, there is only one thing that binds them: she threw herself into the sea, and he threw himself into the earth. The two of them had spat in the face of divinely-gifted eternity, and would have to learn their lesson before Valar and Eldar, flopping fish on a hot-dry-pan."
_______Maedhros Fëanorian is re-embodied onto a desert island in Aman, inhabited solely by Elwing of Doriath, and separated from the mainland by a body of uncrossable water. This, it turns out, is the Valar's judgement - though neither Elwing nor Maedhros take very kindly to being judged.
Summary
So Fëanáro does not die cursing under the stars.
It softens his temper a little, binds him tighter to his sons. Still, he remains himself - self-aggrandising, wilful and thorned.So Ñolofinwë does not lose his youngest in the battle of Lammoth, and receives weregild.
Begrudgingly, for the good of all, he will co-operate. Yet, though a good man, he is no less proud and ambitious.Can they find a healthy way to co-exist? Perhaps not. They are a little too awful to one another. Still, they will try.
Meanwhile, Elu Thingol's concerns are not unjustified, Artanis and Celeborn court, Findaráto is more than meets the eye, and Lúthien labours to make her own future possible. Can a somewhat better united Beleriand stand against Morgoth?
--
[Yes, there is half-sibling incest, beware! But, at least in my interpretation, they barely interacted in youth, as Fëanor was mostly out of Tirion by the time Fingolfin toddled, so their social and emotional dynamic does not really have familial tones.]- Language:
