Mike helps, obviously, he's one of the main writers for the show. He came up with the idea of it being based off of one of their old campaigns, The Paladin and The Cleric. Will had laughed, thinking it was silly but he also loved it. He loved all of Mike's ideas.

He looked at the charcoal smudge again. It was so distinctly Will. It was like finding a fingerprint at a crime scene, only the crime was Mike’s rapidly disintegrating sanity.

In which, Mike Wheeler thinks he knows everything about his roommate and childhood best friend, Will. Will decided he’d rather slip away into himself and observe everyone else rather than verbally participate. Which is what he’d been doing, successfully, he might add, for several weeks now. He’d still give just enough in group settings so no one would notice his lack of contribution to the conversation. And when he thought about it, he preferred it this way. He didn’t need eyes on him all the time, and he didn't need to be the center of attention. He’d rather watch and listen to his friends than overpower them with his thoughts or feelings.
Spying made it sound like it was wrong. But, if he changed it to observing… that was something everyone did.
Will began observing everyone.
