The first thing that throws him off is Colonel Mustang’s odd behavior.
The second thing that throws him off is the trash can. The basket is fuller than it usually is by the end of the day, crammed with off-white wads of paper that appear to be from a notebook or maybe a legal pad rather than from the corporate-white copy paper used at eastern command. Trying to piece it together, Falman takes a shredded piece of paper that has remnants of what he thinks is the word ‘worthy’ on it. The ink smears underneath his fingers, meaning that it’s still fresh. Then, he notices the color of the ink.
The third thing that throws him off is green ink. Not blue or black like the Amestrian military requires to be used for paperwork, but deep forest green. Lieutenant Hawkeye’s favorite color- and that’s not something that most people know, but Falman remembers overhearing her mentioning it to Catalina once at lunch- and he knows that Colonel Mustang would remember it, too.
