“Hon'. Kid’s fifteen; he’ll be okay. He’s got the powers and the strength to protect himself. No Homeworld upper-crusts are after us anymore. Ain’t it time to let ‘im fly the nest?”
Pearl stiffens against the crook of her neck, and she wraps her legs around Bismuth instead, a beat of silence between them for her to think. “You’re right. But he said he wanted to watch a movie with me and everyone else after dinner; he said you would like it too.”

She was always so good at compartmentalization: she didn’t mention bullying incidents to her mom, instead directing towards her spilled iced coffee (containing enough sweeteners that would give Lilith a premature heart attack) at lunch. Five entire dollars, down the drain like that.
“It was necessary?”
“Before that.”
“I felt bad.”
“You really are better than him,” Luz muttered to the dying sky. He was conscious of shaking his head but didn’t fuss. She slung her arm over his shoulders. “You try. That’s what matters, right?”

The first thing Sasha says when they sit down is, “I went on a date this weekend.”
Anne’s breath hitches. Why does she care so much? Sasha deserves a happy life. “Oh. With who? Did you like it?”
Even this is unusual. In the Before, they’d always known everything about each other, from food preferences to idol biases.
Sasha is no stranger to confessions. This time, it’d been an eighth grader from the middle school department, a boy with fluffy red hair and freckles. He was cute , she admits, but in the same way a fad fashion trend or lost raccoon was. Not pretty, like the Perseids, Anne’s smile, or Marcy’s rambles. Sasha is… a selfish person. She was too cowardly to confess, so she went for the next best thing.
Did you like it? On that, Sasha contemplates. Going on a date with a random person to fill a void was not something a nice girl did. Sasha has long known she is far from a nice girl. Nice girls don’t steal.

“You’re a child. I was the adult,” Lilith replied, like it was the simplest thing in the world, like she hadn’t done it a few days ago. “If you feel uncomfortable with me living here—”
“I do,” she continued sheepishly. “But this is Eda’s house, and it’s not like you have anywhere else to go.”
Lilith swallowed.
“If it means anything, you saying sorry… makes me feel better.”
