Summary
Dennis Whitaker is not in love with his attending. That would be unprofessional. And unethical.
There is just something so divine about how the way Robby's hands feel on his shoulders, or the way Dennis feels a swell of pride in his chest when he hears, "Well done, Whitaker." Dennis is not in love with his attending, because being in love implies that his attending would reciprocate. And clearly he doesn't, because during the three month period in which Robby was on his sabbatical, Dennis could count on one hand the number of text messages that Robby had sent him. Even after the late night study sessions at Robby's apartment, or the coffee they enjoyed together. Even after a kiss, the night before Robby left. Robby may never feel the same way, Dennis is certain of it. At least not until the younger man arrives at PTMC via ambulance at three o'clock in the morning after having been attacked outside of a bar.
Dennis gets drunk, goes out to a bar, is sexually assaulted and beaten (possibly drugged-this is up to interpretation), and is transported to PTMC via ambulance. The assault scene is detailed and will have its own explicitly labeled chapter. -
